Thick jelly like mucous discharge - normal???

Hi All,

I am 30+6 and haven't really suffered with discharge during my pregnancy so far. However last night I was discharging a bit and this morning I had a 'lump' of thick, jelly like discharge. I am thinking this could be more like a 'show' but there was no blood and it would be very early.

This is my first pregnancy so not really sure what it means - is this normal? Should I contact midwife? Everything else all normal

Any advice, thoughts all gratefully received. thanks x

Someone with more experience will hopefully be along in a minute but it does sound like a show. We were told at ante-natal class that you can lose this at any stage and it can regenerate, so it's not necessarily a scary thing!

Saying that, I think I'd call the midwife unit and ask their advice anyway, they might want to see you and just check you're not dilating. Hope it goes well.

Is it like normal discharge, just thicker, or is it a proper lump of something that resembles snot?

When I had my show with DS it was a proper massive chunk of snotty jelly. It was not anything that I had to umm and ahh over.

To be honest, either which way, I would get it checked out.

I had a show at 33 weeks last time. I called my MW who said you can lose it at any time and it can regenerate. She said as long as I didn't have any regular pains, cramps of tightenings it was ok. The next day I started getting contractions and DS was born a few days after though!

So I'd probably just call your MW to let her know and see what she says.

Lady's description is about spot on for me.

I would be wary about those saying the plug can regenerate though. When I lost a bit of mine, the maternity said to come straight it is a clear sign that things are altering (cervix changing). As it turned out they were right and I gave birth a few days later!

You may also want to bear in mind (if you've had sex recently) that it could be ejaculate. It does tend to hang around and then reappear as jellyish discharge a day or so later...

Depends how much of it there is? Jelly like discharge like when no pregnant can be totally normal. Have had it this and last preg.

It was only small - about the size of a 5p piece and tbh if I wasn't pregnant I wouldn't even have thought twice about it. Have been out most of the day so haven't called midwife. No further discharge and everything else all normal - babby kicking as much as normal and nothing resembling a cramp or a contraction.

Thanks for all your advice - think I'll sleep on it and see how I feel in the morning.

I have had this since about 28wks, discussed it with the MW. Mine looks like I have sneezed, big blobs of snot. They are only concerned if it looks like cottage cheese (thrush), dark green colour (merconium) or bloody (show). Other wise it is normal but very gross!
