Pessary or pill for thrush in pregnancy?

What have you been given in third trimester. I think I have this. I know I should go to doc but not possible today so would be grateful to know.

Not the oral tablet.

You are usually prescribed the pessary, but told to insert it without using the applicator. The chemist won't sell it to you if they know you are pregnant, generally.

I was always given the pessary but that was 10 and 8 years ago during my pregnancies everytime I had thrush loads I dont know if thats still what they would reccomend.

the tablet is not recommended in pregnancy. You can use pessaries and creams though

As Magi said, definitely not the tablet. My pharmacist wouldn't sell me anything without a prescription from the doctor. I was prescribed the cream only.

The safety of this medicine when used during pregnancy has not been specifically studied. However, it has been used by a large number of women during pregnancy without any apparant harmful effects. As with all medicines, you should consult your doctor before using this medicine during pregnancy. Avoid using the applicator to insert the pessary if you are pregnant. Use your fingers instead.
Since very little of this medicine is absorbed into the bloodstream from the vagina it is unlikely that any of the medicine will pass into breast milk. However, as with all medicines, you should seek medical advice from your doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine if you are breastfeeding.

my MW advised me to buy the pessary and cream (Canesten) a couple of weeks ago when I had thrush. She said that if they wouldn't sell it to me, to send in my husband or a friend to buy it instead!! As it happened, they sold both to me with no worries.

I put the pessary in by hand rather than using the applicator. Symptoms cleared up within 3-4 days.

Cream and internal medication I think are fine, but not fluconazole.

I got prescribed the plessery and the cream (TBH dont think the cream had much effect). It can reoccur, did with me, and then the doc prescribed me a course of 3 plesseries, and if I need more then I can just phone/email for a repeat prescription.
Miserable isn't it? Really has got me down over the last month or so. Good luck getting rid.

I have been prescribed the tablets twice during this pregnancy and several times during my last one. Slightly concerned now though after reading these.

nhs says this:
If you have thrush and you're pregnant or breastfeeding, you should always visit your GP rather than buying anti-thrush medication over the counter from a pharmacy.

You won't be prescribed oral treatment because it may affect your baby. An anti-thrush pessary, such as clotrimazole, econazole or miconazole will probably be prescribed to be used for at least seven days.

If you're pregnant, take care when inserting a pessary because there's a risk of injuring your cervix (neck of the womb). To reduce the risk, it may be better to insert the pessaries by hand instead of using the applicator.

If you have symptoms around your vulva, such as itching and soreness, you may also be prescribed an anti-thrush cream.

Not sure why my GP prescribed oral medication then. I didn't question it, just presumed it must be safe. This time around I was breastfeeding still as well as pregnant.

What are the possible side effects of the oral medication whilst pregnant?

Dangermousey why were you told to buy canestan? Surely you should have been prescribed it and then you would have been able to get it free...?
