Protein in urine?

I last saw my MW 4 weeks ago, and when she did the dip test she said i had protein in my urine. It is already in my notes that i suffered with frequent UTI's in my last pregnancy (fortunately i get no symptoms) and it says to send off monthly samples to be tested, she apparently sent it off but i have heard nothing.

Even with all the infections i had in last pg i never had protein in my wee, will this be because of infection? or something completely different?

TIA

I had this once with DS2 and it was simply because it wasn't a mid stream sample and had got "contaminated" with something on my body.

It can be an indicator of, er, something else but I think it's in conjunction with other symptoms.

Not much help but will bump the thread anyway :)

Thanks for the reply Soupdragon, i am just a little worried as i thought there would have been an infection and i haven't heard anything yet.

Pucca, protien can be an indication of pre enclampsia alongside and unusually elevated blood pressure, think that's what soupdragon was refering to. HTH

it is one of the key tests as an indicator of pre eclampsis. Make sure you get this followed up promptly as it can be serious for you and the baby. Pre-eclampsia tends to become apparant from mid second trimester. How pregnant are you and is your bp still in normal range.

I had protein in my urine in the last few weeks of pregnany and did develop pre-eclampsia,so you need to follow up with this and get your bp checked.

GS has regular urine tests due to him only having one kidney and he has recently had protein in his urine, so I spent absolutely ages trying to understand what it is and why it happens.

Protein in the urine could be a sign of a urinary infection. In pregnant women, Pre-eclampsia would only be suspected if you have symptoms such as an increase in your blood pressure, and other symptoms. If the protein is the only symptom it is likely to be an infection rather than anything else. And, as I learned with GS - protein can sometimes show up with no reason.
If you are concerned - talk to your midwife or GP.

Hi pucca

Usually its a sign of pre-elclampisa but I think usually along with high blood pressure and/or swelling. If there is a risk they will send you to be checked at the hospital.

If in doubt ring your midwife of the hospital.

Thanks for all the replies Smile, i am 20 weeks, and in my last pregnancy i was prone to uti's, so think it likely to be that, been to see GP and he has taken another sample to check, BP was fine, completely normal.
