Booking in Appointment

Im very new to all of this as this if my first and im 5weeks & 2days. I have my first booking in appointment on 18th December which makes me almost 12weeks, i was wondering if this seemed a little late as i have been reading that its usually between 8-10 weeks? Any help would be appreciated :) Thanks

First of all congratulations!

Different areas work in different ways.

Lots now do your first scan and booking in at the same time, so I think that is completely normal.

Unless you think there might be any complications, for example previous blood pressure problems, diabetes etc where you might need extra care then it makes it all less faff than seperate appointments!

Thanks :) We're very excited!!! I wont be having a scan at my booking in appointment as its at the doctors surgery and they dont have an ultrasound machine there. I would ideally like a scan before christmas as we havent told parents yet and think it will be a nice suprise to show them a scan on christmas day.

Each area has a different system for appointments so not sure how yours works. Could you call the community midwife team (might need to ask your doctors receptionist for the number) and ask the team what the system is? They might be able to confirm that your scan appointment is being organised, even if they can't tell you yet when it will be. Most first scans are between 10 and 12 weeks so that the Nuchal Fold can be measured.

Might be worth checking on your local hospital's website too - mine says the dates they do scans so might give you more indication. Often there can be quite a waiting list for scans so is worth getting the ball rolling by going to your first midwife appointment around 8wks or whenever they suggest going.

In my area they are really busy at the moment (not a very big midwife unit) and everyone is getting their scans at 12 weeks, and then an appointment after. Last year when my cousin was pregnant everyone was getting a booking appointment at 8 weeks and a scan at 12 weeks. You could phone the hospital and ask if that's the normal time to go to put your mind at rest.
