Hi Ladies,

Just wonder if you have had your 20 week scan and if so was it just a belly scan or was it a belly and internal? one of my friends keeps saying I will have both as she did which I'm not sure why!! I'm not bothered about having an internal as I've had plenty before, I just like to be prepared lol x

Belly only, I've never heard of having an internal at 20 weeks. You don't need a full bladder either

Well that's what I thought!!! oh good I'm glad you told me that otherwise I would of drank loads and I hate doing that coz they push down and you feel like your going to wet yourself lol x

I think some hospitals check the length of your cervix at scans & so do both but that is quite unusual. If you are going to same hospital as your friend then I would be prepared just in case.

Some hospitals do an internat scan to check your cervix. I actually had mine on Monday and it included an internal scan but you can refuse it if you want.

It's not the same hospital as my friend so they may not do it, I don't mind having it done as long as I know what it's for. Thanks girls :)

I only had a belly scan, she checked the cervix on the scan, I thought I didn't need to drink beforehand and had a pee but the sonographer cussed me, she said that they need to see the bladders position but as mine was empty she couldn't and that if I have any future scans to make sure there's something in there.

Oh blimey!! they don't tell you these things do they? I went to my 12 week scan with a full bladder and she told me to go and have a wee lol

The leaflet/consent form I signed just before the 20-week scan recommended having a full bladder -- pity it didn't say anything on the appointment letter! In the end I didn't and the sonographer didn't mention it. Not a whisper of an internal either, I've never heard of them being used routinely so late in pregnancy (doesn't mean some places don't, though!)

Hello ladies (new to the site) I am 41yrs old & 21 weeks preg. as of this past Tuesday and in fact, last week I was in for my 20 week scan and yes they did both, however they explained in great detail why.

For one my youngest daughter (who is 15 incidentally) was born prematurely at 29 weeks. However that wasn't the ONLY reason he choose to do both scans,... also about 2 yrs ago, I had a late miscarriage and after describing what happened (during the miscarriage) my specialist believes it had something to do w/my cervix not being able to hold after 23+ weeks. Therefore, from this point on I will be getting both scan as a precaution and a home nurse now comes to my house every week to give me a shot of steroids to avoid me going into premature labor.

Oh lol btw,.. I was asked to empty my bladder before they did the internal scan,.

zigwig · 01/11/2012 08:31

I had mine this week and it was just an external scan. There was also no mention of having a full bladder and I haven't for either scan. Pictures were all great without one and sonographer was able to see everything needed so don't think it's vital.
