fragmin

Hi Im new to this site and hope someone on here can help reassure me. In 2001 following a c-section I developed a 9inch dvt in my pelvis, I am now pregnant again and been put on 5000ml fragmin once daily. has anyone else been in similar situation and what can I expect care wise this time round?. many thanks

Hi. I am in slightly different situation to yours but I am 26 weeks pregnant & on 7,500 of Fragmin a day (split over 2 doses). I've been on it since 22 weeks when I found to have multiple clots on my lungs. It's a twin pregnancy & the Dr said it is probably the pregnancy that has caused he clots.

Anyway, I now see a heamotologist (not sure how to spell it!) once a month and have a blood test. The main thing I have been told is that if I have any signs of labour at all then I must miss a dose. I'm actually having a planned section (not because of the fragmin though) so if it goes to plan then I will stop the fragmin the day before & they will inject me again 6 hours after the birth. I will then carry on for at least 6 weeks after the birth before my bloods are checked again. I think that is pretty standard, whether you are taking a preventative dose or a treatment dose.

I have been told that if I ever have another pregnancy then I wi have a treatment dose of fragmin from the beginning.

Let me know if you have any particular questions and I might be able to te you more. I was absolutely terrified at first so I really bombarded the consultant with questions about it all! He reassured me that when you are taking the fragmin you are actually in a much safer position than you were before you even had a clot.

thank you so much for replying, this is my 7th pregnancy and only managed to successfully go full term with 3 beautiful children so being pregnant is scary enough for me without the new worry of blood clots. Im so glad you put about being safer then before i had the clot because all of my other pregnancys where clot free without treatment so there is hope. i am seeing my doctor on tuesday and booking in appointment next month so I too will be asking plenty of questions. good luck with everything and thanks again xx

Hi, can I tag on here too? I'm 15+2 with DC1 and start my fragmin injections tonight (just 5,000 once a day as a preventative measure as I have a hereditary blood clotting disorder which has never otherwise caused me any issues). My haematologist has said I will need a blood test in a week to check my platelet count hasn't dropped but after that he'll just see me in 3 months and then again just before the birth to discuss the birthing plan with my consultant and the anaesthetist. He did say if possible I should stop the fragmin at the first signs of labour to hopefully enable it to clear my system in case i needed an emergency CS but hopefully it won't come to that! I'm expecting to see my consultant more than is standard but at the moment apart from an extra scan at 34 weeks (which I think is more because I will be 41 by then!) I'm not getting any extra treatment.

I was left to deal with it until last week when I kicked up a fuss, hormones took over!! now I have a specialist who deals with clotting and am seeing him on tuesday. hopefully I will start to be monitored or something as blood clots are a serious matter and after almost dying once because not enough after care was given I am not keeping quiet this time. hope everything goes ok for you xx
