stupid question alert - where will baby sleep when it comes? Cot? Moses basket?

Sorry for the stupid question.

If we can't sell our flat in time, we will be very space-constrained when baby arrives.

We do have a spare room (tiny) that can be made the baby's room, complete with cot etc, which I (stupidly?) assumed was where the baby would sleep right away. (Not planning to co-sleep)

However I am suddenly wondering if I am an idiot and if we have to plan instead for having the baby in our bedroom at first, NOT in a cot in the room next door.

Right? Wrong?

If it is advised to have the baby in the same room, we have a space issue as we can't possibly fit any kind of a cot in our bedroom. In which case... what do we do? Have it in our room in a kind of Moses basket/crib?

Am I crazy for thinking that you can put a newborn in a room next door, even if it is literally six paces from our bed to get into the other room?

Help!! I don't know what I am doing here!

It's advise baby is in the same room as you for the first 6 months to reduce the risk of SIDS. Got to say we didn't do 6 months but that is by the by

As for sleeping arrangements my dd was in a Moses basket that she grew out of in 6 weeks. If your pram has a carrycot with suitable mattress u could use that. Or a crib which is smaller than a cot but bigger than a Moses basket may be better for you

Well I think the general government advice is that your baby should sleep in your room until it's about 6 months old.

You can pick up a second hand moses basket for like £20.

Then again, it's your baby and if you're happy for it to be in the other room that's your prerogative

A crib sounds a nice option - might just about have room for that in our room... in which case would it make sense to wait a bit to get a full-size cot, in the hopes that we've moved by then and we can get one that's right for a new bedroom...?

Dannilion - oh, no, no, I'm not one for flouting the current advice!! These questions are because I'm useless, not because I'm bolshy :)

Obviously I absolutely want to do the Right Thing, I just have no idea what the right thing is most of the time.

I'd see if you can borrow a moses basket. Or pick one up second hand. They're so useful for moving baby about while its sleeping. You'll only need it for 3 months though as most babies grow out of them by then.

Shybairns - are the stands you can get with them really good and secure? Or is it ok/correct to leave them on the floor itself when baby is actually in them? Thanks for posting and not mocking my ignorance

The reason for the 6 month guideline is SIDS. The rationale is that your baby hears you breathe thereby regulating their own breathing which is why they say that baby should be with you at all time for the first 6 months.

That's just the advice, who knows really!

Yes in your room so that the baby can hear your breathing apparently (because it reminds them to breathe I think??)

I had same problem as you with my first baby so we had a moses basket next to the bed - not sure if she could have fitted in there for the first six months though, we moved house before then, but she was in there for the first four.

This is all actually great news for me as if we don't need to get a cot set up in the spare room for a few months I can keep it as my work room and use the computer for work in there if I can keep my eyes open while the baby is still tiny. I had been assuming I'd need to make room for a cot and switch to a laptop on the kitchen table!!

Our Moses lasted 8 weeks, rubbish my baby packed on the weight from birth and the Moses just didn't fit him. Just bought my friend a crib stronger and bigger and will last months 6 easily. Id def recommend one.

Well if our baby is anything like DH or me, he/she will be an eater and get massive v quickly... am thinking a crib is the more economical option in the long run. Plus could be lovely used for playing with dollies/toys later. Or another baby, of course - though right now am suffering so much with hip pain that this one might be the only one!!

You'll get a Moses basket easily on freecycle if you want one, then freecycle it again when you've finished with it.

I've been looking at this recently too and am thinking of a bedside cot Co-sleeper thing, like a bednest. Not that cheap but seem like they may last longer than a Moses basket and could take up less space if you don't have much in your room.
