When did you start shopping?? 18 weeks too early??

Hello,

I'm 17+5 with my first pregnancy and concerned about buying things for my baby!!
We ordered a pram yesterday as its on an amazing offer however I now feel so guilty it may jinx things, I wish we hadn't!!
I'm so keen to look at outfits etc and be excited but I'm so scared.
When did you all start to buy things??

I think I bought my pushchair at 12 weeks! I'm 39+5 now and it's still at my Mam's house because for some reason I'm a bit superstitious about it. We bought lots of bits and pieces from early on as I wanted to spread out the cost and by doing it that way we have barely felt the impact.

I would agree with the above message! Buying little and often, spreading the cost is a good idea. I'm 24+2 and have got all my little boys clothes sorted and doing his room next week (getting married on Friday and using gift vouchers to do it!) Doing it that way is more cost efficient I think!

Writing some lists and looking about to get a feel for budget and what liked, yes, but didn't actually buy a thing until after 30 weeks, and most of it in last couple (im 35) - had some sort of inability to do so till after 20 wk scan but even then only got pram sorted out.

Kind of glad as have had a tidalwave of things of loaded on to me as my bump has grown that I may have otherwise bought eg Moses basket, clothes, snowsuit, reusable nappies, bath and stand, bedside cot, plus changed my mind on a couple of more expensive options eg ear thermometer, two slings - one for wrap phobic/ buckle obsessed DH but following male bonding session at nct where they all hatched a plan to be baby wrapped in a boys afternoon pub outing in the distant future (oh their little fantasies!) after a moby wrap was passed round at the nct session and they nodded approvingly at the lego stylee instruction manual so I have just settled on the moby - for now!

Also, you suddenly get very good at sniffing out nearly new sales, which as well as enabling you to get lots of new and barely touched stuff for pennies are also good for just browsing to see what you need compared to what you want. (i forgot about socks!)

Having said all of the above an nct baby was born at 32 weeks .... but shops are still open after the birth and amazon a few clicks away!

I am 15 weeks. We are not going to buy anything until well after 20 week scan.

I bought bits and bobs right from the day I hit 16 weeks. I was too excited!
I would agree with buying little and often, avoids a big bank-balance draining towards the end.
Plus by the time I got to my final weeks the thought of going shopping made me want to cry!xxx

I had the essential baby things, which I bought at about 35 weeks, but only bought one pack of hospital clothes for the baby (Asda do a pack with 3 white baby grows, 3 white vests, hat, gloves and booties). Didn't buy anything else clothes wise until the baby was born. I had been told I was having a girl, but after 3 boys wasn't convinced, so didn't want to buy the clothes until I knew.

I feel the same way, OP, and am definitely waiting until 20 week scan before I buy anything at all for the LO.

At that stage, I will probably start to buy bits and pieces but again will probably wait until later to buy most things.

Meantime, though, I am drooling over babygros in the shops when I see them and doing LOADS of research so that when the time comes to buy I know what I'm going to buy from where.

If you're worried about spreading cost, you could always put some money away each week rather than actually buying...

I haven't had to buy much this time round as this is my second dc, but I did buy a cute bunny rabbit to celebrate the 20 week scan and halfway point! I waited until the 20 week scan last time too to start shopping, but can't see the harm in buying a few things a little before then. Like others have said, spreading the cost helps.

I don't see buying things early as a jinx I see it as a positive statement that in x months you will be welcoming a healthy baby. I started getting bits as I saw them second hand almost straight away. I couldn't afford to do it all in the last couple of months anyway.

We had most things as its DC2, but once we found out the gender at the 20 wks scan my DS who is 5 and very excited and I went to the shop and he chose 2 little outfits for his new baby brother! It was a lovely day and I don't think that we jinxed anything!
Little and often was how we bought with Ds1 so we could spread the cost.

I'm pregnant with number 2 so we already have anything, and so far nothing has been jinxed! Buy it when you see it. With number 1, I bought a lot of stuff at Boots (including the carseat which was pretty much the same price everywhere) and the advantage points I got (over £100 worth once I got a breast pump, bottles, some nappies on special offer etc) bought and paid for my Christmas shopping that year but I was able to spread the cost.

I'm 8 weeks pregnant with number 2 and I bought a cot and pram from Ebay (mammas and pappas and silver cross) second hand for less then £40 together! I saw a bargain and couldnt resist! I bought my sons carrycot when I was in the first trimester too. It makes sense if you see a bargain. Why wait as 'others' say you should wait. Its your decision and yours alone. Buy whenever you want to. Go with your heart x

i bought stuff before DD was even concieved!

picked up some great bargains and continued getting real bargains the whole way through pregnancy!

Totally agree that you should do what you want and what you feel comfortable with. I just feel that if I were to buy a cot and pram and then have bad news at the 20 week scan it would be heartbreaking to have that stuff around the house....

I'm not superstitious at all and don't believe that buying something for the baby will cause anything medical to happen to them, I can understand though why people would want to wait until they knew all was ok so that they didn't have a load of stuff around them as a reminder.

However, I am also on a budget and love an excuse to shop and so to spread the cost started buying at 5 weeks, I only bought a few babygrows before 12 weeks but once that showed all was well and I knew the risks were miniscule from then on I have bought everything except the furniture (I'm 20+4 weeks now).
I want everything all done and ready before I am huge and will find it a struggle plus I worry in case she's early and we're not ready.
