Just felt like posting a fun silly thread! (36+4 and I am clearly bored...) When ds was born I had to stay in hospital overnight and hubby brought me in a half bottle of champagne (that waited till I got home as I thought the midwives might not like me having a glass on the postnatal ward...), some pate and stilton. It was soo nice to indulge in some previously forbidden treats! I am planning the same pate feast again this time, plus dreaming about soft-boiled eggs with toast soldiers.... drooling :)

Mmmm, love food. Am only 8 weeks pg, how am I going to last the next 7 months (over Christmas)!!!!!!

sushi is allowed in pregnancy, just limit your weekly tuna intake!

I had a whole list last time (pate etc) but TBH my food aversions continued while BFing

I'ld love to go mad on caffine but if I BF that won't be the best plan Hmm

Those of you not eating runny eggs - why on earth not??

The rule relates to the absolutely microscopic chance of catching salmonella. Any egg stamped with the Lion mark means the chicken has been vacinated against salmonella.

Because the government think we're stupid they don't do nuanced advice anymore.

Are preggers ladies not supposed to drink McD's milkshakes? Why not?

I had sushi from supermarkets but not the amazing proper sushi from the restaurants near work. Bloody love sushi, and now on mat leave all the decent sushi places are miles away near work!

Also ate peanuts, cooked prawns and runny eggs throughout. Did my own online research and my conclusions were they would be fine. Sometimes folks hear from others/perceived wisdom that 'you can't eat xxxx in pregnancy' and it's bunkum/old advice. I did avoid pâté and shellfish though - a friend got properly ill after eating oysters (from a v posh place too).

The milkshake thing is about the machines and catching some kind of bug if they are not cleaned properly same with Mr whippy.

Id say mc donalds are pretty hygienic as they would be inspected regularly, ice cream vans not so much trust there.

when i was pregnant with dd i was told no nuts at all..this time i was told yes eat nuts.

It is all 'just in case' and the guidance changes on a weekly basis. Swaddle no don't Swaddle blah blah

I am going to eat the runniest, slimiest, stinkiest chunk of Camembert. In a big triangle shaped slice like cake. Friends are bringing back from France especially.

I've been promised lobster and chippy chips (not banned but you can't have lobster without them!) with sparkly wine! Hurry up junior!! Grin

My MW said no McD's milkshakes - because of the temperature, same as Mr Whippy ice creams. Not cold enough to keep bugs at bay - not to worried about not having them anyway, so don't know if they would be on my personal 'go for it' list.
My MW also said no to stilton - not even cooked (last time I was pg last year, cooked stilton was ok as long as it was cooked all the way through). Am gutted :(
A lot of the recommendations are just that, and 'just in case' too - you do your own research and make your own decisions I think. Same with swaddling etc.

also with soft serve, an individual carton may have a "use within Xamt of days/weeks once opened" thingie on it, but its just added to whatever is in the machine already, so bits of really old cartons will be in there even if you followe cleaning guidelines

so a bit like tipping your milk into the same jug all the time IYKWIM

and even following cleaning guidelines (which the shop I worked in actually did but can imagine places not doing it because its a real ball-ache of a job) chunks of grim gunk comes out!

its still delicious though!

The first thing i'll probably eat is the toast and jam the nurses will give me.

Report
PedanticPanda · 05/10/2012 18:03

Apart from that the only thing I've been avoiding is caffeine and alcohol so haven't gave anything up, but if I'm breast feeding I won't be able to have a vodka and redbull waiting for me at home.

I find it baffling that midwives are going against official NHS guidance. The NHS website says Stilton is fine - so why are midwives telling people it's not?? Also, why wouldn't you eat lobster, it's only raw shellfish that are banned?

Hate to piss on anyone's parade - but after almost 24 hours nil-by-mouth (2nd on list for ELC, but so many emergencies that day I didn't get into theatre till 5.30) I fell on the stale curled-up-at-the-corners NHS cheese sandwich like bloody manna from heaven (in my defence I was off my head on pethidine at the time). Not quite the caviare, stilton and champagne fest I might have imagined before hand.

Peanuts?! If you are not meant to have them this baby is screwed. I have peanut butter on toast or crunchy but cornflakes every day....
