Newborn bedding??

Hiya,

I'm due with DC1 in December and am trying to figure out what I need to buy.

I have what might be a stupid question... what to use for bedding for newborns?! I hear that some babies don't like being swaddled, so what would you use instead? Can they go straight into a Gro Bag from birth, or do you need to use something else at the beginning?

My DS had a blanket straight away when he was in the Moses basket then into a sleeping bag. Tbh it depends how big the baby is. As long as their head won't slip down into the sleepin bag their ok in them really little. I have friends who put their daughter in from a few weeks and folded it over at the bottom.

We have flannelette sheets (to go over the mattress and for swaddling) and cellular blankets. We haven't used sleeping bags/gro bags as DS was very very little - we may do so in time (although we are used to the sheet/blanket system now!)

You can't usually use a grobag until they're over 8 and a bit lbs IIRC, when my DD was still in her moses basket I just used small pram blankets, or massive muslins when it was hot, and tucked them right in down the side of the basket. She hated being swaddled so we never did that.

My DS used a gro-bag from birth. As llong as their head doesn't got through the top bit it's fine!

But DS was 8lb 11 when he was born!

DD when straight into a grobag. She was 9 11 lbs at birth.

We had 3 fitted Moses basket sheets and 3 cot bed sheets, he's now 2yrs old and I've never needed more even with tummy upsets although we do have a tumble dryer.

We used blankets to begin with for Ds, but with no 2 we will be using grobags from birth, if baby is big enough.

We do have some blankets that are still useful for out and about in the pram or just snuggling.

You'll need 4 sheets- maybe more if you have a sicky baby, and a few gro bags. And a couple of blankets. Gro bags come in different togs so get ones that are appropriate for the time of year.

Sleeping / Gro bags have changed - if you buy one with poppers under the arms they can be used from birth / 7lb (check packaging on different brands though).

So I'm intending to put DD into an unnecessary but adorably pretty brand new one her brothers' old ones from birth. Much easier than sheets and blankets ime - especially if they cry and you end up carrying them round etc.

I used a cellular blanket with ds at first but he didn't really like it and I used to worry about him somehow slipping under it, plus tucking it under the mattress of the moses basket made the mattress bulky at the sides. I started using a grobag when he was maybe 3 weeks old and found it excellent - he was snug as a bug in a rug and totally safe as no way he could slip inside it. I could pick him up and cuddle him still in his grobag and then pop him back down again. They do have to be 8-10lb before you can start using them, can't remember the exact number of lb. This time round I've bought 2 cotton grobag swaddles, which are just nice wrap-around cloths and look comfy, then I will use grobags as soon as she is big enough. One tip - I always bought grobags off eBay as so much cheaper and still excellent quality as little ones grow out of them so fast. 2 grobags was always enough for me, as could be washed and tumble dried quickly. I had 2 fitted sheets for moses basket too. I have the same number this time round, except am using a crib instead of moses basket - I also have a HippyChick mattress protector for the crib, which is soft and doesn't crackle despite being 100% waterproof. The moses basket didn't need a waterproof cover as the mattress was wipable. x

So it sounds like its basically dependent on size of baby. I will probably get a couple of cellular blankets and a couple of grobags to begin with and see how we get on.

I have also been looking at the "miracle blanket" (or equivalent), so if we get on OK with swaddling then I might splash out on one of those too.

Swaddled in moses basket until about 10 weeks then gro bag. still in gro bag now at 2 and in big girl bed, refuses a duvet "bag mummy, bag!!"
