Worried about giant bump

I keep getting told how huge my bump is and now I'm worried I'm going to have a giant baby. I'm 36 weeks nearly and am also panicking that the size of my bump is going to be ridiculous by 40 weeks.

Any one have a giant bump but an average sized baby??

I had a massive bump with ds and looked totally out of proportion to the rest of me! He was born at 39+4 and weighed a perfectly normal 7lb 7oz. This time round my bump is much smaller and I'm expecting a dd. 36+4 today but at last midwife appointment my fundal height still measured okay. I don't think size of bump accurately equates to size of baby - depends on many other factors such as baby's lie, amount of fluid etc. x

chezziejo · 03/10/2012 11:25

Everyone told me with ds that I was huge, strangely the midwives didn't seem concerned and he was 7lb bang on. I'm told this time at 33 weeks by some that I'm huge and others in proportion. My midwife measured bump at at 32 when I was 32 weeks so all good I think. You know what they say, opinions are like arseholes, everyone has them so I shouldn't worry too much Grin

I have been huge for all of mine!

Actually thought I was having twins unknown with DD1. She was full term and only 5lb 10oz.
2nd was born 34 weeks and weighed 3lb 15 1/2 oz and again bump was huge.

Im 32 weeks now, bump is bigger (stretchmarks from DD1 are even stretching) but baby is weighing in rather small :)

aimingtobeaperfectionist · 03/10/2012 11:40

My consultant predicted an 11lb baby but DD was 8lb11 and just over a week late. Don't worry, people probably just say you're bump looks big as you didn't have one before! People can be quite insensitive I found.

BroomForMyChin · 03/10/2012 11:43

I had a HUGE bump. My midwife kept saying I was measuring too big. I was literally a bump with a small head on top. DD was 6lb 11 oz so perfectly normal. I also lost all the baby weight fairly easily and I don't have any stretch marks either Smile

You'll be fine.

squidgeberry · 03/10/2012 12:33

I think bump size may be to do with your anatomy. I had a huge bump as I am quite short and short waisted with narrow hips, so bump could only go outwards. Friends with smaller bumps are generally taller and maybe more roomy in the pelvis so they didn't stick out as much.

Thanks ladies. Here's hoping it's just a big bump Confused

Are you measuring big for dates on the tape measure part of your MW appointments?

I had a huge bump. Measured about 4 weeks ahead from 28weeks I think. Had growth scans to check and yep, still big.

11lb resulting baby with a huge placenta and much amniotic fluid. So no bloody wonder I was massive!

Sorry, if that's not helped Grin

DSis had a humungous bump with her lst baby. He was 2 weeks early, and weighed just over 6lb. It was a bit of a joke, such a leetle baba coming out of such a huge bump (we tend to do big babies in our family as a rule, none of mine were under 8lb).

He did, however, feed like a demon after he was born and piled the weight on at such an alarming rate than he nearly didn't fit into the family christening gown Grin

MayimBialik · 03/10/2012 14:14

I seem to have measured bang on for my dates - so at 33 weeks I measured 33cm etc. but I did get sent for a growth scan due to excessive growth over a 2 week period (although wasn't big for my dates - The curve had just gone too steep iyswim)

The scan at 32 weeks showed a 5lb baby and when I followed the curve it said that the baby would be 8lb8 so while fairly sizeable not HUGE.

I'm just a bit concerned that I may have ballooned a bit since my last antenatal apt because of what everyone is saying to me. And i feel guilty because my diet has been crap - well I've eaten lots of good things and am getting lots of nutrients as well as taking my vitamins, but I've developed such a sweet tooth that I'm panicked the baby is getting too much sugar and packing it on - eek!

I craved cake and curry with ds! May have contributed to the huge bump! It took me a while to lose the pregnancy weight but didn't get any stretch marks and he was a normal 7lb 7oz, despite all the jam sponge.

devonsmummy · 03/10/2012 20:12

Could be lots of amniotic fluid.
I was mahoisive with dd / everyone said 'twins'?
She was infancy 9lb 10oz but I also had loads of fluid.
My waters went while pushing & the midwife had to call someone to help her clear up as she'd never seen so much water come out Grin

lolo99 · 03/10/2012 22:18

this has made me feel much better-thank you all!! I am 21 weeks + 4 and people keep telling me I am going to be massive/baby massive. This freaks me out as I am pretty small at 5ft and petite frame :( Hopefully I will just have a normal size baby boy (know the sex) and the big bump is just because I am little.

TheToadLessTravelled · 03/10/2012 22:22

I measured several weeks ahead through most of my pregnancy and although ds was on the large side I think most of it was water. When my waters broke they kept going for about 5 minutes, so it was obviously an Olympic sized pool he had been swimming around in!

I have a massive bump, Mayim & i'm frightened of the same re; massive baby, mostly due to insensitive remakes like 'octomum' or are you sure you're not having twins etc.

What happened to people saying we look radiant or blooming?

We paid for a 4D scan recently & were told our boy was bang on the size & weight he should be & although it's eased a little, i'm still worried.

In the bigger scheme of things, it doesn't matter as long as the baby is healthy, however, I just wanted to let you know you're not alone.

People always have to make a comment, I've had people telling me my bump looks small yet at my 25 week appointment I was measuring 28 weeks so big for dates!!
