couldn't see sex of baby at 20 week scan

Has this happened to anyone else? Does it get clearer as the pregnancy progresses? I have to have another scan at 32 weeks due to placenta previa and was going to ask them to look again then.

How frustrating for you. They struggled when I was scanned with ds1. It took 3 attempts, with half hour breaks between them, to get there. They had me drinking water then fizzy drinks, tipped me backwards and forwards, etc until they got there!

This happened to us! I was so disappointed. Just unlucky that the position wasn't right.

We booked another scan a week later and found out it was a girl :)

Happens a lot, particularly with girls.

I found with my later scan it was harder to see any detail and was only a quick check of placenta/position etc.

I paid for a private scan.

Poor you. I had my scan yesterday and I was worried the same would happen. My partner looked it up and it said apparently 8 out of 10 times they can't see. It must be really upsetting as it's lovely to have milestones during pregnancy - that feels like a long time. My mum found a place near us (we live in Leeds) where you can have a 3d scans done and a video etc - they recommend at 26 weeks - could be a thought for you? www.meetyourbaby.com is the website and I think they do them all over the UK. We are probably going to do that as well.

Yep cord was in the way. Baby was a girl which I discovered at birth . I've never been one for surprises but hate hospitals more so had no intention of having a gender scan. Plus I was measuring a bit small so had visions that I wouldn't pass the tape measure and have to go for another scan anyway. It didn't happen though!

Gender scans are usually done at clinics not hospitals, mine was in a big house near Stoke.

We paid £79 with babybond, they do 4d too and gave us 5 photos and a disk with 15 more on, it was a great experience, they spend loads of time getting the shot from below which shows their legs and genital area so they can be certain of the gender, they also pointed out every bit of her and we got to listen to her heartbeat. I was 16 weeks pg and the sonographer was certain she's a girl.

If you definitely want to find out, I wouldn't wait until your 32 week scan. By then, they can be so bunched up its even harder to tell. That's why private scan companies stop offering gender scans at 28/30 weeks I think.

Will have to do some research and see whats the latest they can normally see. Will talk to hubby, but maybe we will just keep it to be a surprise after all.

Suprising the number of people upthread who said the same, which might give you an indication......

They could only say 90% girl at our scan. Good enough for me - I'm calling her "she" til I see otherwise! We're not picky though. And my hospital does a 32-week scan as a matter of course so maybe they can check again then.
