Fundal height

Hello. I am new to mumsnet. Wondered if anyone had any similar experience to mine? At 24weeks my fundal height was 20cm measured by midwife (told me this was small). Now 26 weeks and going back tomorrow. We think that my fundal height is 21-22cm. I was only 7 and a half stone before pregnancy and have now gained 1 stone in weight. Baby was growing fine at 20 week scan and I get lots of movements.

You might just be having a small baby. Speak to MW about your concerns. I can't remember much about mine.

And welcome to Mumsnet.Smile

i remember reading that it's supposed to go up 1cm for every week and that it corresponds to the week, ie at 30 weeks it'll be 30 cm and this was true for me but i would imagine it has a lot to do with your's and your babies body shape and how baby is lying. they won't worry based on fundal height alone, at 26 weeks you mw should be well able to feel your baby and determine what size he is so don't panic too much, size alone isn't much of an indicator of health, lots of babies are small Envy and you were quite petite yourself so i doubt your having a huge baby

Hi and welcome I was also very small before having ds and my fundal height did not pick up until week 30 when it suddenly started catching up. He was perfect :)

Hello CarmenH - Don't panic - I'm going through exactly the same thing at the moment.

I only weighed 6 stone beofre pregnancy (I wasn't ill, didn't have an eating disorder - just naturally very small and slight), and I'm now 28 weeks pregnant and have put on a stone and a half.

When I went for my checkup last week, the midwife said that fundal height was far too small, and that the baby was at least 3 weeks underdeveloped.

She sent me straight up to hospital for a scan, where we discovered that although my fundal height is small, the baby is actually measuring a week bigger than most babies of her number of weeks.

It seems from what the hospital told me, that fundal height is only a rough guide, and certainly doesn't mean that the baby is necessarily small - as my big baby has proved!

Hope all goes well for you - keep us informed of what they say.

My fundal height was spot on for dates BUT my baby was 4 lbs 9 oz so was not an accurate indicator at all. I know plenty of people with small bumps but 'normal' sized babies.

Thanks for the messages. Have been back to the community midwife this afternoon and still measure small (but bigger than two weeks ago) so Im going to hospital for a scan tomorrow morning. Will let you know what happens.

Hiya,
I had this with my dd2, my midwife sent me in for a scan at 38 weeks coz she thought the baby was small.
The sonographer actually told me that she was already 7 and 1/2 pounds and would be at least 8 pounds when she was born.

However, my dd was born weighing 5 pounds and 14 ounces. So in my case the MW was right and my scan was wrong. (not to worry you)

Scan yesterday was fine. Baby is growing nicely according to midwife at hospital. Nice to see her again and get some more pics!
