How early can a scan detect a heartbeat?
I'm having an early scan Thursday because of abdomen pain and other problems. (No bleeding though)

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I had an internal scan at 5 weeks hoping to find a heartbeat.

More reliable at 6 weeks.

All the bestx

BadgerFace · 25/09/2012 19:15

Heartbeats can definitely be seen at 6 weeks, my bump's was! How far along are you?

Good luck.

JupiterJoy · 25/09/2012 19:17

Thanks :-) at a guess about 6w

I was told at my scan that it was too early to detect the heartbeat. That was at 6+3.
Wonder if it depends on now they do it, how the baby is lying etc.

frankie4 · 25/09/2012 19:24

I had a scan at 7 weeks that detected a heartbeat.

OodHousekeeping · 25/09/2012 19:24

6-7 weeks

NarcolepsyQueen · 25/09/2012 19:25

Mine was 6 weeks

azazello · 25/09/2012 19:26

I have 2 IVF babies. With both, we had a scan at 6.5 weeks and both times heart beats were clearly visible. Good luck.

itsaruddygame · 26/09/2012 08:54

Heart beat was visible at 6 weeks 2 days for me but I think sometimes it can take a bit longer.

randomimposter · 26/09/2012 09:21

I had an abdominal scan at 6+3, though only measured 5+5, and there was a HB. He's now 1 week old. Good luck.

sundaesundae · 26/09/2012 09:23

The issue is usually how far along you are, if I had gone at 6 weeks they would have seen very little as I ovulate very late. If you are thinking of going for a reassurance going for 7 weeks would be most likely to see a HB and that your dates will be ok even if a bit out.

KatAndKit · 26/09/2012 09:26

6+4 was when I had my first scan and there was a heartbeat. Measured 6+1 but the dates caught up by 9 weeks. Generally, 6 weeks is a bit hit and miss but if it doesn't show up on an abdo scan it may well show on a transvaginal scan. 7 weeks is more reliable and by 8 weeks you will definitely see the heartbeat.

HiHowAreYou · 26/09/2012 09:30

I saw one when I was measuring five weeks and five days, though I thought I was seven weeks exactly.

Moominsarescary · 26/09/2012 09:33

Around 6 weeks

Chubfuddler · 26/09/2012 09:35

Transvaginal scan I would say at least six weeks. My local private hospital refused to do a dating scan until seven due to risk of distress if HB couldn't be found.

PostmanPatsBlackandWhiteCat · 26/09/2012 09:51

I was eight weeks when I had transvaginal scan it showed a heartbeat. DS1 is now 4 years old

mistlethrush · 26/09/2012 09:56

My 6wks hb is now 7.5yrs! He was dancing around at 9wks (and hasn't stopped since)

Paradisefound · 26/09/2012 10:20

I had an early scan at 7 weeks, heartbeat seen.

minipie · 26/09/2012 10:28

I had no hb at 6+4 (sonographer wasn't worried, said it was too early) and then a hb at 7+4

wildpoppy · 26/09/2012 11:04

In my first pregnancy they found one at 5 weeks plus 2 days. They thought it had probably developed a matter of hours before the scan.

Thumbwitch · 26/09/2012 11:17

I heard a clear heartbeat at 6+4, from internal probe (transvaginal scan)

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 28/09/2012 11:05

How did you get on op?

Pudgy2011 · 28/09/2012 15:23

Saw DS's HB at 5+6 (and heard it!) - depends very much on when you ovulate.

Hope all is well.

JupiterJoy · 28/09/2012 21:02

They found a heartbeat! And they found it on abdominal ultrasound and didn't have to do internal :-)
In 7w1d today :-)
