Help! Confusing pregnancy test results...

I'm hoping someone can help me with my predicament!

My period is due on Saturday so still 3-4 days to go, but last night I caved in and did a test using a Boots' Early Response hpt (this is the one with blue dye which forms a + sign if you are pregnant). Anyway, lo and behold a very faint line appeared.

This morning I did another test of the same brand and also another + sign - this time a bit stronger.

Anyway, since then I foolishly read that some blue dye tests that make the + can be particularly unreliable. So at lunch I ran out to get a superdrug test with pink dye and re-tested this afternoon and NADA totally negative.

I'm a bit confused and feel like I'm going mad with the wondering. It's been hard to concentrate today with the excitement and then disappointment that ensued. Argh!!!

Has anyone used the Boots tests before and is it true that they are sometimes unreliable? Also, is it more likely that I'm not pregnant seeing as the test I did this afternoon was negative?

Thanks for your help in advance xx

I don't know... But I think the neg in the afternoon might be because the pregnancy hormone is more dilute. Hence the recommendation to use first wee if the day.

Can't comment on those tests but don't they say you can have a false negative but not a false positive as either the hormone is there or it's not?

Marmiteisyummy · 19/09/2012 21:00

I'd say it was more likely that you had dilute wee this afternoon giving you a false negative. Superdrug tests are supposed to be pretty good though. If I were you I'd get another pink dye test and test with fmu. Or if you don't have another in the house just keep the wee in a pot and test as soon as you can get one with that sample. My personal choice is an FRER, no doubting the line with that.
Very best of luck.

Thanks for your replies, I am hoping that the "diluted wee theory" this afternoon is the reason for the bfn. Only time will tell, but I am impatient at the best of times...!

It's definately true OP - I had a negative 3 days before I was due on, the afternoon before I was negative and then voila - the next morning I had my positive! I'm now 6 weeks.

I know they're expensive, but the digital tests are the best. Cheaper if you buy on Amazon, and you get next day delivery too!

Spanishomelette · 19/09/2012 21:22

Thanks Mildred, that gives me hope! I will look at buying the digital test tomorrow. To be honest it's worth the money if it stops me going insane over the next few days Grin

I like First Response best - they have a pink dye & have never let me down!!

megab · 20/09/2012 08:54

I have been told by my midwife and doctors that you can never have a false positive test result (no matter how faint the line), but you can have a false negative.

My advice would be to do a test at your doctors, clear blue seems to be quite reliable too in the meantime.

HaveALittleFaith · 20/09/2012 17:34

Sorry to say yes I have had false positives on those very tests. The I bit of the + was much thinner and over to one side. I got a bit excited but tried another test and it was negative. I used the other from the twin pack another month and had the same again.

I found the best tests First Response Early Response tests. I got a very clear and instant BFP. I hope it's not the same for you as it was for me! :)

i have just found out i'm definately pregnant..had loads of negative tests but had all the signs of being pregnant..so waited a few more days then retested and i now have two lines although one is fainter ..go by your feelings ..am now soooo excited

mildred37 · 20/09/2012 19:57

So did you test OP?? :-)

RancerDoo · 20/09/2012 20:03

You can have a false pos if the test was faulty. I have had three over the years and they were all a little weird.

A FR, with which the second line, having appeared, vanished during the time it took me to shower.

Two cb +/- with which the verticle line was off centre and very thin. They did not look normal.

I have not heard of the Boots tests being unreliable, although I find the CB blue dye tests pretty rubbish.

OP, your tests sound normal so I am on board with the dilute pee theory.

HaveALittleFaith · 20/09/2012 20:11

OP could you put pictures of the tests up

Spanishomelette · 20/09/2012 20:32

Thanks everyone for your messages. I have now got 4 faint + signs but the last one I did with fmu today was negative so I guess the diluted wee theory wasn't right on this occasion although I know it normally is Sad

I had some cramping yesterday afternoon and have a feeling that it may have been a chemical pregnancy.

My period still isn't due though for another couple of days so you never know, miracles may happen...

I have taken some photos of my 4 sticks (!) but no idea how to load them up for your analysis??? x
