Pain in top of bump when coughing ( woe is me)

25 weeks pg and I've had a horrible cough for weeks/ months, so bad I'm vomiting with it and going light headed every time I have a bad fit, and today I feel like I've pulled a muscle or something in the very top of my bump on my left hand side, near my ribs, as it is agony to cough and I have to press really hard with counter pressure while I cough or I physically can't.
I've taken paracetamol for the pain but there's bugger all else I can do, is there? I went to gp yesterday about the cough but he sort of fobbed me off a bit as he said my chest sounded clear so I'm reluctant to go back as I look like a hypochondriac :(
I do have a ventolin inhaler as I have had mild asthma in the past so have been taking that, but am so wheezy at night I've been having to take it a few times at night.
Just needed a good moan really, thanks for the vent !

i hate doctors like that, there must be something stopping the cough going. id advise getting another appointment to see a different doctor. youve probably pulled a muscle have you tried co-codamol instead of paracetemol its a little stronger but still ok to take in pregnancy.

I will try some co- codamol tomorrow, thanks, didn't realise I could take it when pg. the doctor said 'well what do you want us to do' (perhaps expecting me to demand antibiotics? ) and I felt really stupid for wasting his time. Even though I have put up with this cough for seven or eight weeks before seeking advice and DP had to force encourage me to go to doctor.

If you've had the cough that long clearly it needs a closer look. I hate doctors like that too. I would go back again asap. See a different doc if poss. It sounds like you prob have pulled something but its possible to get pleuresy when you cough loads which is also really painful.

You might have a chest infection I used to get them a lot when younger and it sounds just like what you describe. They will go on their own but it can take months it's better to get double checked you might need antibiotics. Demand they take you seriously as you are not being silly. No-one should have a bad cough that long.

I actually don't think it is a chest infection- I'm fine in myself and phlegm is clear ( sorry,TMI!). And pain isn't pleuritic. But I'm just so frustrated and feel so tired because I'm coughing all the time. Sad

Poor you. I feel for you as I've got a cold too there must be a lot going round. But mine's not as bad as yours. A cough still shouldn't really go on that bad for months. Has it eased up at all?

terrywoganstrousers · 19/09/2012 12:01

Thanks for asking zigwig, no it hasnt really eased up today. I had a warm bath this morning to try to ease the rib pain but i still feel crap. DP is away, rang me from abroad today and all i can do is moan about how ill i am Sad
i'm just fed up of feeling pathetic and like a hypochondriac all the time! And am getting literally nothing done- no work, no housework, nothing.

Oh poor you. I had the rib pain you describe at 25 weeks but without any cough. It went away at about 26/27 weeks and hasn't come back (touch wood) so hopefully you will be the same. Do get the cough checked out though...I agree with seeing a different doctor, that one sounds rubbish.

crazypaving · 19/09/2012 14:48

Sympathy OP. I had the same pain - had really bad hayfever and pulled a muscle somewhere round my ribs by sneezing 13 times in a row (may also have wee'd myself a bit Blush). It took ages to go away, which apparently is perfectly normal.

I was just advised to ensure I took deep breaths to prevent any lower lung consolidation. It hurt, but it worked. Hope yours gets better quickly, sounds horrible Sad
