Just curious really - DH and I have been TTC for 3 years in November (long story - fertility issue on his side which we knew about so we did expect this)

I know it's just the way it is, but every single person we know who has had a baby or is pregnant either had a surprise unplanned pregnancy or fell pregnant within a few months if trying.
Our latest friend to fall pregnant took 5 months which is the longest of anyone we know in RL.

It is a bit disheartening TBH especially because I think people are now starting to realise we are having problems as we have both always been openly broody, have a decent house and jobs, married for 2.5 years etc - from the outside it must seem like there is no reason for us to not have had a baby by now! Sad

I know it takes most couples a lot longer than a few months and we just must have a group of fertile friends!

So...how many months were you trying?....GO!

It took us 4 months. When decided to get serious we....

  1. Limited our alcohol units - me about 5 units a week and DH about 10 units
  2. Ate LOTS of fruit and veg - pumpkin seeds and apricots recommended for good quality sperm!! And tried to limit sugar intake Sad
  3. Had lots of sex (pretty obvious I know) which again improves sperm quality
  4. Used ovulation kits

So not really romantic and my DH nicknamed it 'project baby'. Anyhow, it worked and apparently it takes 4 months for your system to get baby ready and lo and behold we got pregnant month four! But it's taken a few of my friends much longer and there's been some fertility issues with a couple of them.... so it's not easy for a lot of people.

HaveALittleFaith · 13/09/2012 21:06

Ha yes rungi it happened for us doing 'project BMI baby'! He cut down on the booze, I started exercising regularly and eating healthier - less processed and more from scratch!

upanddown83 · 13/09/2012 21:16

1full year off the pill using condoms then 9 months no condoms just got my bfp this morning!

nananaps · 13/09/2012 21:18

9 pregnancies all together.

Varied between 6 months and 22 months to get pregnant.

This time, not even one month, fluke, miracle, amazing.

minipie · 13/09/2012 21:20

11 months. And only after i had hypothyroid diagnosed and medicated, i don't think it would have happened otherwise.

OP, remember some people lie about how long it took (not here but in RL). Best of luck to you

Whitamakafullo · 13/09/2012 21:21

With DS it took 18 months, DD (who was born 11 months after DS) it was the first time after having DS.......

MrsApplepants · 13/09/2012 21:23

We are very lucky, took just 5 weeks from making the decision to try to positive pregnancy test.

DilysPrice · 13/09/2012 21:26

18 months for DD (though that included one early mc after 15 months). 2 months for DS. Was in early 30s, and well on the road to IVF.

LittleBlackDress · 13/09/2012 21:56

2.5 years. Unexplained infertility and then we got lucky! Every month was an ordeal - the timing, the lack of spontaneity, the 2 ww with never a positive at the end of it. Everyone else falling pregnant and having babies. Very miserable at times. Really feel for you - wishing you a BFP ASAP!

FatimaLovesBread · 13/09/2012 22:05

I'm due 23rd November! 30 weeks tomorrow Shock

LikeCandy · 13/09/2012 22:17

I took my last pill on the 23rd May 2012, and we're now 10w 5d pregnant!
We weren't trying, but we weren't preventing.
To be honest I assumed it would take us a long time to conceive because I have endometriosis and PCS, we were hoping/planning for a September baby and we're getting an April baby - I feel so fortunate!

I have a friend who has been trying for 2yrs, and to be honest she is the person I am most nervous about telling!

GreenOlives · 13/09/2012 22:20

Pregnancy 1 - 6 months (DS)
Pregnancy 2 - 5 months (miscarriage)
Pregnancy 3 - 13 months (miscarriage)
Pregnancy 4 - 10 months (ectopic - tube removed)
Pregnancy 5 - 2 months (chemical)
Pregnancy 6 - 5 months (currently 17/40 and have everything crossed!)

No rhyme or reason to the conceiving game as far as I can see! Good luck OP, hope it happens for you soon.

jammic · 13/09/2012 22:20

3 years and 3 ivfs. We've got a 10 month old now. He is worth the weight but it was so hard getting here. Good luck, hope your path becomes easier.

Doilooklikeatourist · 13/09/2012 22:25

Married in June , went for it straight away , pregnant in August
Second time stopped the pill in September and pregnant by Christmas .
In my 30 s both times .

KnackeredCow · 13/09/2012 22:33

32 months. Although it was on our third cycle of IVF - and we'd had a failed frozen cycle between IVF1 and IVF2 too. We started IVF after two years of trying as I had diagnosed infertility after a lap and dye. We went through three IVF cycles and the failed frozen one in the space of seven months - we took the minimum time off between cycles that we could and our frozen attempt was on a natural cycle.

Good luck! I hope you get your BFP very soon.

Leftwingharpie · 13/09/2012 22:42

Life is good Faith thank you. Currently 17 weeks. DH has coped remarkably well with the news and hasn't felt the need to kill himself after all. Hmm April is a lovely time for a baby!

Secondsop · 13/09/2012 22:45

keepthechange I hope these responses have been some comfort to you in showing that everybody is different; some people get pregnant straight away (which is why we've all gone to great lengths to stop getting pregnant at points in our lives!) and some people take much longer. I really hope it all works out for you soon x

SlimJimBra · 13/09/2012 22:55

A bit over 4 yrs - on our 2nd IVF attempt. A long fight but so worth it :)

caramelgirl can I ask who did you approach for private px of cyclogest? And did you use it in the 2nd half of every cycle or only once you got BFP? I think that might be what made the difference with our successful ivf cycle as after acupuncture I discovered I have a lower than average body temperature (35.8 before ov, 36.2 after)

AbbyRue · 13/09/2012 23:18

1 month 1st pregnancy (DS)
1 month 2nd pregnancy (DD)
2 years 3rd pregnancy - MC at 8 weeks Sad
3 months after MC for 4th pregnancy - DS2 due in 6 weeks

Hope all goes well soon for you

TodaysAGoodDay · 13/09/2012 23:28

4 pregnancies, one baby, it took us 6 weeks to conceive him.

Sophisticatedknickers · 13/09/2012 23:55

9 months for DD1, 15 months for DD2. With both of them it wasn't until I we relaxed and stopped stressing about it that it happened. Easier said than done, I know Sad . With DD2, it took going to the doctor to start the 'is anything wrong?' process for me to share the responsibility-stress of it all, I think and then I didn't need to get the results of the 'are you ovulating?' bloodtest because I was pregnant Grin.

Like you, virtually all my friends got pregnant the first month they started trying. So many tears were shed by me in frustration and jealousy.

Sorry if this is TMI, but have you tried hanging off the bed afterwards to let gravity help?

Cynner · 14/09/2012 05:25

Four children. Two pregnancies were surprises. Two were planned, and conception occurred that month. I always feel lucky I was able to conceive and bear children easily. My darling sister has secondary infertility. She has been ttc for five years.

GeordieCherry · 14/09/2012 07:16

Psychologically, I've been ready for it was 4 years. Once I'd got the right relationship & the all clear after cervical cancer scare it's been 5 months

I'm mid 30s & was worried it wouldn't happen. Changed diet & exercise & had fortnightly acupuncture. I'm absolutely convinced those things helped

Also DP took zinc & drank fewer fizzy drinks

Before our bfp every month was 2 weeks too long & 3 friends got pg. 2 by accident Envy

I'd really recommend the acupuncture. Find a practitioner you trust & enjoy the relaxation

Dandelion75 · 14/09/2012 07:20

4 years and 2 rounds of IVF. Now pregnant 10+4 and still can't quite believe it Grin

JessieEssex · 14/09/2012 07:23

1st month with DD, accident (not ttc) with pregnancy 2 (ended in mmc), 1st month this time (now 11+2). Like other posters have said, I'm so aware of how lucky we are - have many friends who have struggled.
