Just wondering if you can ask for a membrane sweep? Have the midwife on monday when ill be 38+5 and wondered if she might check my cervix, and if it is favourable.. Would she do a sweep? Thanks in advance!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

You can ask but its unlikely she will do it before your due date unless you have a medical reason to attempt labour so soon. Sweeps generally only work if you have a favourable cervix thats beginning to efface anyway, if its still long and closed a sweep won't do a damn thing whether you are 38 weeks or 42 weeks.

Thanks Pascha!

Grin you could have another 3+ weeks to go yet...

SoYo · 08/09/2012 18:09

They won't do them before 41 weeks with first or 40 weeks if there's special circumstances. Sorry! Good luck x

HereLittleKitty · 08/09/2012 18:12

I had sweeps at 39 weeks but I had SPD.

My consultant wrote in my notes that he wanted me to have weekly sweeps from 37 weeks, but my midwife still refused to do one until I was overdue, so I don't like your chances!

ellangirl · 08/09/2012 22:03

I asked my consultant the other day if I could have one before 40 weeks, she said it would be absolutely fine from 38/39 weeks. They induce and section routinely before 40 weeks so why not do a sweep? Hopefully my midwife won't be like yours kaymundo Grin

FirstTimeMumma · 08/09/2012 22:36

Ah that sounds reassuring ellangirl! Good luck for your sweep Grin and hopefully my midwife is a bit like yours! Feel for you Kaymundo!

Look up the NICE guidelines which (im paraphrasing) say sweeps at 40 and 41 weeks at mothers request.

FirstTimeMumma · 08/09/2012 23:37

Ill do that laura. Thanks for the advice!

I'm going to ask for a sweep on Monday if DC3 hasn't come by then - I'll be 38 plus 1 but I've had the most god-awful pregnancy asthma (nebulizer, steroids...) for the past 6 weeks, can't sleep - bloody awful.

My cervix is soft, 85% effaced and a tiny bit dilated though - and I've been having lower pack pain/menstrual cramps/pelvic pressure for a few days now, so this baby is going to come TONIGHT in any event!!!

Will also be doing sex as DIY sweep later on Grin

Good luck chocolateGrin i hope bubs makes an appearance tonight!!!
