No idea but he may suffer with reflux as my DS did (silent but very painful for him and not realised until about 4.5 months) - I am pregnant with DC2 now and this baby has hiccups all the time (right now in fact) so I will be looking out for the other signs when s/he is born.

I think it can also be symptomatic of tongue tie. It may also just be 'practicing breathing' but it's good to know of possible problems too

My baby had hiccups almost constantly before she was born and I had similar concerns. For the first 6-8 weeks she had hiccups quite a bit but it didn't really bother her. And that was it! No reflux or tongue tie or anything.

NiceCupOfTeaAndASitDown its funny you should say that because my freind had a little girl 27weeks ago and she suffers from reflux an has to have baby gaviston,, and her older daughter suffered from hicups in the womb and also has a tongue tie,, I'll be keeping my eye out for both..
Thanks for the heads up.. :-)

Ds hiccupped for weeks before birth and months after. No reflux or tongue tie. He was, however, really difficult to wind and cried a lot. Took a year to get him to self settle.

Dd rarely had/has them. No issues with wind in that she doesn't seem to get it. Never needed winded and still, at 15 months, feeds to sleep at night.

They're all different I guess.

DD hiccuped all the time in the womb and had reflux. I had never thought of there being a connection. I though reflux was just because she was born early and her tubes/ digestive system hadn't matured properly in utero. I'll be watching out for hiccups with my current pregnancy. 17 weeks and baby already very active Grin

Of course, I did know that frequent hiccups on the outside were a reflux symptom. They never seemed to bother her though.

DS was a constant foetal hicupper and he is now a hicuppy baby with no reflux or major problems with wind - he farts and burps like a trooper but it doesn't bother him. I was also a hicuppy baby pre and post birth, according to my mum, and never had wind or reflux either. No way of knowing, I'd say!

MrsPaynie · 09/09/2012 21:46

I've never thought of this as a connection before, but DS had hiccups all the time before birth and suffered quite serious reflux until about 9/10 months old. DD never seems to have hiccups and I never had a problem winding her and no reflux. Expecting DD2 now and she seems to have hiccups a fair bit so I'm hoping that doesn't suggest more reflux...

DD used to get terrible hiccups inside, but no reflux or tongue tie. She was a champion posseter though.

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 10/09/2012 07:46

Dd hiccupped at least once a day for the last few months of pg, and gets hiccups now at 9mo every few days. She didnt have reflux, or tongue tie or be hard to burp.
