I had my 20 week scan yesterday, all lovely except the lady spent a very very long time looking at the heart, then she said she couldn't count all the chambers so we would need to come back at 23 weeks and possibly more to monitor the development of the heart..

Anyone know what this means? she said the baby is small, i think this is down to me being really poorly in hospital at the start and all the medication i took.

i was under the impression that all organs are fully formed by now

Your baby was maybe just in a hard position for the sonographer to see the heart properly. I had to go back a week after my 20 week scan because they couldn't see the base of DD's spine and they had to check for a dip. It was the position she was lying in and I moved around a lot to try and get her to move.

Try not to worry to much, if they thought it was a problem they would have referred you to a consultant.

I havn't had my 20 week scan yet but I contracted baby foot and mouth and other problems at the beginning of my pregnancy, everything is fine now although in passing she said at 20 week scan to do a thorough heart check it's likely I might need to go back a few weeks later as its common not to see all 4 chambers due to positioning, size of the baby etc so don't worry I'm sure everything's fine! From the 20 week scan, I was on fortnightly scans/ see the consultant til wk 36 for heart development monitoring. I remember being in floods of tears one time when after about 20mins the not very tactful sonographer said she couldn't get a heartbeat but then consultant was reassuring about positioning. DS duly arrived fine. Try not to worry. You can always ask for consultant referral if you feel you need one for a proper explanation.

I do have a consultant, the next scan is a couple of days before i see the consultant again about my c-section so i may bring it up then if the scan doesnt come up clear again

hopefully everything is fine, if its not we will deal with it. The monkey was lying really funny and we wasnt able to get a decent picture either which was a bit rubbish!
