What are the chances of a gender scan being wrong?

Had my scan and it's a girl :) Would be happy with a boy too, the most important thing is that the baby is ok. I have lots of clothes from my twins B/G and don't want to get rid of the boy stuff just yet, in case the person doing the scan was wrong :)
Anyone been told it was a girl and at the birth they had a surprise?
thanks

I have a friend who was supposed to be a girl but is a boy... but obvs the scan was 20+ years ago, so maybe things have improved since then?

I think with the machines now it's often very obvious and the sonographer will tell you if they're unsure. With ds in particular it was completely clear. And at a second scan to check his position, the consultant remarked on his 'enormous scrotum'. He could have been a girl but one with a penis and testicles.

NHS said almost certainly a boy.
Had a private scan because DH unhappy about the "almost" (he hates not knowing, didn't mind if b or g!).
Private scan said girl.
Was a girl.
This was only last year, a lot depends on the baby's position.

had a friend who last year was told girl and baby was a boy. thi k sometimes a boy baby can hide their bits! never geard of anyone being told boy and then having a girl.

my dd was a girl after four boys so i was skeptical when they said girl at twenty wk scan and paid for a private 3d scan at 28wks. still wasnt convinced till i saw for myself!

5madthings · 05/09/2012 15:52

but bike has just proved you can be told boy and then baby be a girl! you are the first i have heard bike!

I was told girl and the sonographer pointed out the shasow of the labia.

Found out at a scan a few weeks later it was certainly a boy!

I know 3 couples who were told one gender at scan only to have the other. Two were told girls but had boys, one told boy but had a girl. Think its fairly common tbh.

Signet2012 · 05/09/2012 16:03

My sister was told a boy all the way through had a girl two weeks ago so it does happen!

kittykatskumkwat · 05/09/2012 16:05

The girl in the hospital bed next to mine was told girl and I overheard her on the phone to lots of people going I know but everything's pink!! I know of 2 other people it's happened to aswell do more common then you'd think but today is the first I've seen where someones been told girl instead of boy, I was told if its a boy it's always right as you can see the willy they get it wrong with girls sometimes as they miss it

TwinMummy30 · 05/09/2012 16:15

wow! it's more common than I thought, I think I'll wait with sorting out the clothes.
I had a scan 5 years ago when I was pregnant with twins I could clearly see boy and girl. Same as you TyrionTheImp boy's bits WERE there :)

This time I saw nothing :( Baby was in agood position with the bottom up and the sonographer checked it twice but I also have heard stories of being told the wrong gender so my mind is playing with me. I already have a girl's name and have had it for the past one year but for a boy..... don't like anything :)
Oh well, have to wait 17 more weeks to find out :)

I don't think it's that common, I think your thread just attracts tales of it happening. If you'd said 'sign in if they got it right', you'd have a bias the other way. Grin

My friend was told "I'm not allowed to say 100%, but off the record- you ARE having a boy".
Out popped little DD2 Hmm hence I am still sceptical about being told this overdue bump is a boy.

LadyofWinterfell · 05/09/2012 17:37

DD2 was told girl and she was, DS however was supposed to be DD3!

MooMa42o · 05/09/2012 17:45

When i had my scan 3 & 4 years ago they told me they can get them mixed up sometimes when they say it's a girl it could be a boy just with bits hidden, but when they can clearly see it's a boy then that is usually accurate...but as with anything there has to be error involved somewhere along the line....hmm not sure if that makes as much sense typed as it did in my head!
