I've been really struggling with tiredness and energy i feel like the walking dead, iron tablets make me so constipated that it is total agony.

so i saw on here that spatone doesn't make you backed up. I've got orange juice to take it with however i am very sensitive to tastes

Can anyone tell me what it is like??

I took Spatone after my miscarriage. It tastes ok with fresh orange - but there is still a very metallic aftertaste. I used to down it then have a quick drink of orange on its own to try and get rid of the taste! It's not pleasant, sorry. I see there's an apple flavour one that's supposed to taste nice, but I've never tried it.

Spatone isn't as strong as tablets though, so you might find it doesn't make enough of a difference. You can take 2 sachets a day during pregnancy though I think?

AdiVic · 03/09/2012 11:29

I used to drink it with juice and never noticed the taste, I guess some are more sensitive than others.

I also suffered with being bunged up, tried everything and nothing worked. Only thing that did help was reflexology, worked a treat! A friend of mine found that to:)

Good luck, enjoy and the tiredness does pass:)

It just tastes metallic IMO - nowhere near as as Floradix, which I couldn't stomach at all. It doesn't taste nice, but it's not stomach-churning.

ellangirl · 03/09/2012 20:16

I don't really notice the taste. It's preferable to black poo and constipation Grin

8abyDust · 03/09/2012 20:59

I drink it with apple juice, tastes fine like that. Its so much more gentle on your tummy.

Elpis · 03/09/2012 21:02

Tastes like a rusty nail when mixed with orange juice, but that's better than the tablets. Took first sachet tonight so can't yet vouch for effectiveness. Sip of red wine afterwards took the taste away. Smile

I have 2 sachets a day - just chuck it in my OJ and gulp it down. Certainly better than the tablets

KateShmate · 03/09/2012 21:11

Definitely nicer than the tablets!
Although it doesn't have as much iron content in the SpaTone, you actually absorb more iron than you would if you took the tablet - so SpaTone is better than taking the tablets. Hope that makes sense!
P.s anyone can take SpaTone, even if you're not anaemic

SkinnyMarinkADink · 03/09/2012 21:11

Well i chickened out today. going to do it in the morning tomorrow and hope for the best.

I need to keep the iron levels up feel bloody awful with no iron supplement

thanks for all the replies. hoping this is an alternative to black poo lol

I quite like it! How about something bitter like tonic water or grapefruit juice, that might mask it even more than orange juice. Good luck.

Mandinga79 · 03/09/2012 21:36

I ended up anaemic during pregnancy and took two sachets of Spatone a day in a pint of OJ - could hardly tell it was there. Combined with careful diet, the anaemia got sorted, even though I'm a strict veggie. Word to the wise - dried apricots are very high in iron but I ate so many of them I ended up with glucose in my wee and got tested for gestational diabetes (which I didn't have - just over-enthusiastic dried apricot consumption). Oops. Blush

Bibs123 · 03/09/2012 22:28

Its disgusting, tastes like blood, u just have to gulp it back quick and have something to drink after to get rid of the taste. It got my iron levels up though. .

Badgerina · 04/09/2012 00:36

It does taste like blood. Mix it with tomato juice and pretend you're Sookie Stackhouse Grin

I take Spatone to keep my levels healthy. I have no dude effects at all from it Smile

SkinnyMarinkADink · 04/09/2012 08:10

badge now there is an idea..i could pretend that dh is Eric northman...mmmmmmm

(not sure what "dude effects" would be Confused Clearly my iPhone knows more than me. I meant BAD effects, obviously)

SkinnyMarinkADink · 04/09/2012 09:31

Really i had thoughts about becoming a dude lol

Tomato juice is the answer - I mix it with Alvalle gazpacho (comes in Tetra Paks from Ocado - yeah, I know, very middle class) and that disguises it perfectly.

EdMcDunnough · 06/09/2012 11:23

I got hooked on spatone last time I was pg.

I didn't think it tasted like blood at all - like rusty water is more accurate imo.

I mixed it with OJ and because it's in a natural form, it's really easily absorbed, doesn't make you constipated or nauseous, and for me it got my iron up from well below homebirth levels to nearly 10 within a few weeks.

It was brilliant. So quick and painless.
I reckon I'll need it again this time, I always get anaemic when I'm pg and they always say 'you will need a transfusion if you don't do something, and you can't have the baby at home'. sigh

I had my homebirth btw
