Interuterine growth retardation

I had this with dd and have often wondered if this is the same as pre-elampsia as I had blinding headaches and occasional high blood pressure. I didn't ask at the time as it all happened very quick at the end. I went for a nornal hospital appt mentioned the fm was down and ended up being induced.
Dd is fine although small for her age and I do wonder if the lack of nutrients etc. in the womb will affect her long term. I know this may be strange to be enquiring about now she is 5 but I think about it sometimes still. Also MIL had eclampsia and I read somewhere there can be a genetic link , is this true?? Dh was not too impressed when I said maybe I should warn future SIL!

My DS had Interuterine growth retardation. I think it can be linked to pre-elampsia though I never had it so can't be sure. DS stopped growing at 28 weeks and at 32 weeks had only grown a small amount.
Ds has Cerebral Palsy due to the Interuterine growth retardation If your DD has no signs of problems now, I would think she is ok.

Thanks sm
I suppose what worries me is they didn't scan until 36 wks and then induced me and I don't know when she stopped growing. My sil has cp and I hadn't thought of the connection . Have you any other children? Luckily ds grew fine - I had about 6 scans , however that made me realise that I believe I should have been scanned more with dd.

I was scanned at 30 weeks because of my size (5ft) and they discovered that he had stopped growing about 2-3 weeks prevourily and was the size of a 26 weeker. His MRI scan shows damage consistant with growth failure in the third part of pregnancy. I have 2 DDs too. DD1 has CP too but that is due to her being very premature and having O2 problems at birth.
generally hospital will only scan if the midwifes feel that the baby has a problems. What was your DDs weight? DS was 5lb 2oz.

colette · 20/12/2003 22:10

DD was 4lb 11oz. I must sound a bit of a pessamist as she seems ok. But she is immature for her age and it is something I think about from time to time. I remember them looking at the 02 levels on the scan and if I am truthful at the back of mind I worry about it

Sorry I meant to say how premature was dd2. I am a bit ignorant about cp - my sil has it very mildly only a slight tremour in her hands

DD1 was born at 31 weeks weighing 3lb 12oz. She had a lot of issues and was in hospital for 5 weeks.
DS has mild/modarate Cp affecting his walking, balance, sight, fine motor skills and speech, he is in mainstream school though and doing very well. DD1 has modarate CP affecting her walking, balance, sight, speech, behavoiur, and social skills, She is in a SN nursery atm, but hopefully will be able to go to mainstream school.

I have revatilsed this thread as there a few questions I have following my visit with the consultant today.

Mears if you are around, your professional perspective would be appreciated!
The consultant said as my DD was small, well he called it this intrauterine growth retardation'and this baby is measuring up a little smaller too that I will be scanned monthly. Very reassuring, so I'm pleased, but he won't let me go overdue. Is this normal Mears?? Will they induce or do c-section do you know? I'm not worrying particularly, but just wondered what happens and why maybe they end up smaller than normal!!

Quakers I hope you get a reply soon .
I had regular scans with ds and he is a big boy (now 7mnth old and wieghs 21lb). It was great having extra scans as it reassured me and I felt clossr to him iykwim. They told me 2nd babies are usually bigger.
Good luck

quackers, I had a couple of extra scans with dd2 as they thought she was small. in the end she wasn't and I stopped having extras. she was absolutely fine. good luck

Quackers · 12/02/2004 13:12

Oh that's encouraging! Thanks!

Blackduck · 12/02/2004 13:23

I had several scans after 30 week mark as I simply din't measure very big (didn't look pregnant!) and didn't seem to be growing. Ds's head was 'on the line', his femur was just below, but his waist was well below. At 37 weeks his waist had tailed off totally so they decided to induce at 38 weeks (a kind of 'better out than in' policy...) - although blood flow through cord was fine. Born in 2 hours, weighted in at 4lb 15 oz...perfectly fine (despite near c'section and the entire - well it felt like it - neo-natal unit on hand). Now 9 months, weighs about 16lbs...fine, if small...

mears · 14/02/2004 15:42

Quackers - try not to worry too much about this because it is actaully quite common. What weight was your dd? How tall are you? What type of delivery did you have last time?

If there is a concern about growth then you may well be induced before your due date. You would not need a C/S unless the baby was showing signs of being distressed. Your doctor will be thinking he is reassuring you by scanning monthly - try not to worry unless you have to. A friend of mine had 3 babies who were all under 6lbs. She had monthly scans and always managed to go into labour just as they were thinking of inducing her. Some women just have small perfect babies IMO

Hi Mears thanks for the reply! I'm not too worried as all the girls in our family ha been tiny - until puberty!
She was 5 pounds at just over 41 weeks. This baby is measuring 15 weeks whilst I'm 16.5 and previous scans for this baby earlier were right for dates. Suddenly seems to have slowed a little but heartbeat strong and kicking well so I am very encouraged by that! I think I'm lucky to have an excellent consultant who won't let this baby go over unlike my poor DD who suffered alot during birth. I am totally happy to be induced too as I was with DD!
Thanks again though for your reassurance!

Help! I had a scan on Friday and the measurements are all (apart from HC) coming up small (HC measuring like 2 weeks ahead everything else 2 weeks behind) but the sonographer said they are all in the curves (at different places) so not to worry. On the EFW chart the baby was on the 5th centile at 20 weeks so I was referred to consultant. 28 and 32 week scans showed good growth (moved closer to the 50th centile line) and midwife said it will just be a small baby as long as she continues to go up the curve nothing to worry about. At my scan on Friday (36 weeks) the baby had gone down to the 5th centile line again (although the sonographer didn’t plot it on the chart so I only noticed when I got home that evening). She has gained about 500g in the 4 weeks since my last scan but I am worried now that she is not following the curves.... is this a sign of FGR/IUGR? I have a midwife appointment tomorrow but she always dismisses my concerns so I’m worried she won’t take me seriously! xx
