Im 21 weeks pregnant. Was half way through eating a chicken Kiev, thought it tasted a bit funny and was kind of crunchy, looked down and it was still raw inside! Not just a bit pink, it was completely raw! Im now panicking that its going to harm the baby! Anyone got any advice on what I can do? Thanks x

I would say half a Kiev won't harm the baby, however i would be prepared for the runs and a bit of sickness

also, NEVER start eating chicken without checking it thoroughly first i am very anal about chicken as it scares me to get food poisoning

Can you make yourself sick? I also would phone NHS direct for advice I know zone one who ate raw chicken drumstick on a buffet and got really quite I'll from a mouthful. Worth s phone call

I wouldn't usually advise this, but if I were you I would make myself sick (presuming you have only just eaten it). If you ate it a while ago ring NHS direct.

Thanks for your replies. I tried to make myself sick straight away after realising it wasnt cooked but couldn't bring anything up.
I feel so awful for not checking it first! Dont think I will eat chicken again for a long time! Think ill give NHS direct a call to see what they say x

A glass of salt water and be next to the toilet will make you hurl!!!

BabyBellasMumma · 30/08/2012 19:14

NHS direct said not to make myself sick. They said that if i do become unwell, as long as i don't get dehydrated then it wont harm the baby. Feel slightly relieved by that. Just got to wait and hope i don't get ill now!
Thanks for all your advice! X

Hope you will be okay and have a tummy of steel. my dh once at a whole pack of gone off bacon, he cooked it first and the smell still lives with me now and i can't eat bacon somehow he was alright

he really doesn't pay attention to things that are raw or gone off (i am chef in our house for this reason)

keep an eye and fluids up. hopefully it will be okay

I really hope you don't get food poisoning - I had roast chicken with mustard at a restaurant when 24 weeks preg i was ill for days :( I still can't go near chicken or mustard and it's been 10 months ugh! Baby will be fine tho even if you spend hours in the bathroom, all you need o do is stay hydrated. Flat lemonade with raspberry cordial is best to keep sugars up and raspberry helps relieve nausea. Am honestly wishing you best of luck to not get sick!

Firstly - don't panic! Eating raw chicken won't in itself make you ill. Certain Japanese restuarants will serve medium rare chicken or even chicken sashimi.

If you're worried about salmonella, bear in mind that this tends only to be present on the skin of chicken. It would be very difficult (I would say near impossible) for the bacteria to work its way inside the muscle (like the chicken breast). Plus, the risks of getting salmonella from chicken nowadays are vastly exaggerated, largely due to the fact that farm animals are exposed to so much antibiotic treatment.

To put it into perspective, you have about as much chance of getting salmonella from eating undercooked chicken breast as you do of getting e-coli from eating a medium-rare steak. So whilst there is a risk (obviously the reason why pregnant women are also advised only to eat well cooked meat) it is very small so please try not to worry.

I hope you're feeling ok today!

BabyBellasMumma · 31/08/2012 12:17

Well its been about 19 hours since I ate the raw chicken and im still feeling fine! No cramps or sickness yet so fingers crossed im going to be ok! Although to be honest im not sure how long it would be before symptoms showed anyway. Just hoping ive got away with it! X

Most symptoms of food poisoning manifest within a few hours but with salmonella it can be up to 48 hours so if you're still fine tomorrow evening I reckon you're all clear!
