Compression hosiery during labour for varicose veins

I have varicose veins (legs and vulval). I've seen people on the Midwives programme wearing compression socks during labour. Is this to protect their veins? I thought socks weren't suitable for varicose veins in pregnancy as they are too tight at the top but don't think tights would be very practical in labour Smile.

I'd rather wear neither as neither are comfortable but are they recommended? I am wearing the tights in pregnancy when I could be bothered to.
