Arthertius in hip during pregnancy

Has anyone been diagnosed with artheritus in their hip whilst pregnant?

I'm 25 weeks and have had a really sore dull ache in the top of my thigh on the outside, it almost feels like its burning inside and won't stop aching! I've just been to the doctors and she said she thinks it could be artheritus in my hip?

Just wondered if anyone had experienced anything similar and if so what they did to help ease the pain as its awful :(

You can get arthritis due to pregnancy. But it could also be a type of SPD/pelvic girdle pain. Ask for referral to a physiotherapist.

Hi
I had arthritis before I was pregnant but it was worse during pregnancy. Pregnancy hormones seem to trigger inflammatory arthritis in some, for some it just lasts till your body settles down for others they are stuck with it. Lots of treatments for it though once diagnosed.
I found the extra weight of pregnancy crucified my hips.
If it is inflammatory arthritis then their are some treatments you can take to tide you over during pregnancy, but the best drugs have to wait.

I had was diagnosed with sero-negative inflammatory arthritis in my wrist just before I became pregnant with DC2. It spread to my knee whilst I was pregnant.

Anti-inflammatories and many other disease modifying drugs can't be used during pregnancy. In my case, I was treated with steroids - first injections and then tablets. They worked brilliantly on the pain and inflammation but of course steroids have many side effects (including in my case gestational diabetes Sad) so it wasn't a decison that I or my doctor made lightly.

Are you being referred to a rheumatologist?

Thanks for the advice everyone - no doctor just sent me away and said take some paracetamol Angry I am seeing the midwife tomorrow so will have a chat with her!

Was it your GP who said she thought it was arthritis? If so I would ask her for a referral to a consultant. A diagnosis of inflammatory arthritis (which are the types generally associated with pregnancy) is usually arrived at due to a combination of symptoms (stiffness, pain, inflammation, fatigue), blood tests and history. If she's just basing it on pain I would say she's guessing (and a bit rubbish)
It could be as someone else pointed out SPD (which is more likely). Either way it warrants more investigation and a referral. If it's arthritis to a rheumatologist, SPD to pregnancy physio.
A support belt from physio although designed for SPD actually really helped with my arthritic hips towards the end of pregnancy.

Thanks wonky - it wasn't my usual GP and no other symptoms up until when the pain stated. Midwife thinks its more likely to be SPD but as the pain has gone now no referral needed. Thanks for your help. Smile
