Hello

This is my first pregnancy and I'm 8 wks. I have got my first scan at 11 weeks. SOOO excited.

I'm a bit concerned at the midwife at the doctors phoned
And left a message to say, book an appointment with her 16 wks AFTER my first scan!!

Is this normal, so I'll be 27 weeks, had my second scan before meeting my midwife at my doctors?!?!😁
Can anyone give me some advice please?

Many thanks

You're in England? I wonder if she meant to book an appt for when you are 16 wks pregnant, not 16 wks after scan. That doesn't sound right at all, they'd want to see you before the 20 wk scan.

And congratulations btw Smile

How did you get your scan appointment? Who did you book in with?

BenedictsCumberbitch · 25/08/2012 12:28

Oh yeah I misread. She'll want you to book an appt for 16weeks.

Our area goes something like this:
10 weeks ish booking in appt
12 weeks scan
15 weeks consultant appt
20 week scan
22 week midwife appt
and so on as the midwife/consultant sees fit. Obviously more if high risks etc.
Do you have a consultant appt before 2nd scan?

Perhaps she meant book an appointment for when you ARE 16 weeks which will be after your 1st scan. Saying that the should see you around the 10 week mark. Have you had your booking appointment yet?

noblegiraffe · 25/08/2012 13:11

You'll need a booking in appointment with the midwife before your scan otherwise you won't have any maternity notes. They also need to do blood tests to check iron levels, rubella immunisation, HIV status etc.

Phone back and double check.

It will be when you're 16 weeks, not 16 weeks after your scan. Don't worry!

Thanks guys. I was given a form to fill out at doctors, then given this booklet that I have to fill out and take with me to the first scan.

Maybe that is what she meant book at 16wks, I don't think they would make me go that long!

I will ring and check.

Thanks for all your messages x

Thanks! I live in Wales. But I think she must have meant AT 16 weeks.

In Wales you don't get a booking-in appointment with the midwife before your first scan, which I found a bit strange. They do all the blood tests etc at that scan appointment, at the hospital.

But if you do want to see a midwife before then you can phone her (or one of the community midwife team) - you should have the phone number in the pack of information you got at your GP surgery when you told them you're pregnant.

Where I am (central London, St Thomas' hosp) it goes like this:

8 weeks - booking
12/13 weeks - scan
15/16 weeks - MW
20/21 weeks - scan
24/25 weeks - MW
28 weeks - MW
32 weeks - MW
34 weeks - MW
36 weeks - MW
38 weeks - MW
39 weeks - MW
40 weeks - MW
Etc...

I think there was a comma missed out in the phone message.....

"Book an appointment for 16 weeks after your first scan"

OR

"Book an appointment for 16 weeks, after your first scan"

With the comma (and the pause it implies) it makes sense! Once you have had your scan you phone the midwife and make an appointment for when you are 16 weeks.
