Early scans....what method did they use?

I've been referred for an early scan to asses the age of little bambino - I'm pretty sure I'm either 8 weeks or 12 weeks pregnant!!

If I am 8 weeks will they be able to pick bambino using a normal ultra scan on tummy or will it have to be a vaginal one (shudder)? I'm fairly slim with just a bit of a 'mummy pouch' from having ds 9 months ago (not sure if that makes any difference?)

TIA

Trans-vag. It was ok, painless.

I've had early scans at 6+5 and I've always had transabdominal. I'm a size 14 so not a skinny minnie.

I've had scan at various stages between my 3 pg's. 7 weeks and before I found they were all T/vaginal. 8 weeks and after they always managed to find the baby through the abdomin. T/vaginal - it didn't hurt.

It depends. Here they would typically do a TV at 8ish weeks although I went at 9 weeks, declined the TV scan (find it a little "intrusive" and after a MC I prefer to just leave things alone in there, thankyou) so tried TA. Drank 24oz of water one hour before appt, couldn't see much on the scan so tech gave me 24oz more to drink and bean showed up! I have a tilted uterus so tech didn't think it would work but it did. And then I had a l-o-o-o-o-o-ng pee in their bathroom.

Tinyshiny - brill! Bet that was the best pee you've ever had!

Thanks for the replies. I've had a TV before and didn't particularly enjoy the experience. I'll do it again if needs be but would def prefer not to! I hate being prodded and poked down there (apart from DH obviously!) infact I thought the examination was the worse bit of childbirth!

at 7ish weeks I had an internal scan.. it was fine, really really no proble at all.

DeliaMcNab · 24/08/2012 22:15

Internal scan at 7 weeks for me too. Not painful at all.

PeazlyPops · 24/08/2012 22:17

I had a scan at 8 weeks as part of the IVF. They did an external scan first to show me the baby & the heartbeat, then did an internal as its more detailed.

ItsMyLastOne · 25/08/2012 09:19

I had a scan at 8+ weeks and that was transabdominal. But I've had an internal scan in the past for something else and it wasn't as bad as I'd expected. They used lots of lube!

PedanticPanda · 25/08/2012 09:22

An internal scan at 8 weeks, honestly it's nothing, you barely feel it.
