Hi,
I'm 14 weeks and getting terrible pains quite deep in my butt cheeks. It's usually after standing for a while and tends to be worse around 5pm when I finish work.
My friend said it could be sciatica but I've never had that so don't know what it feels like.It feels like I've done a thousand lunges, but doubt i'll have the glutes to show for them!!
Has anyone else experienced this/know what would help to releive the pain?
Thanks
LP x

Could be, does it goe down your legs at all? Or does it hurt to widen your legs? It could also be the start of SPD which is relatively common on pregnancy. Worth talking to gp about that, researching further. If sciatica, not a huge amount you can do for the pain really. I get it due to back problems but, I take stronger painkillers for it, not great for you! Paracetamol is actually a very good painkiller but you need to take it continuously and regularly to see proper benefits. Ibruprofen depending on stage of pg and with advice of gp only can work, as it is an anti inflammatory.

If sciatica, exercise such as gentle walking, swimming, pg Pilates are good, working on posture, and heat/ice packs if due to back problem/pain severe. However, I don't know much about SPD, I think exercise is not actually very good for that, which is why you need to make sure you know what it is before treating it so you don't make it worse.

It sounds very much like sciatica ....I really feel for you as my experience has just passed. I was 27 weeks before it started as a pain in the bum which then radiated into my lower back and down the leg and its very painful and got to the stage where walking was almost impossible ( not to mention slightly embarrassing !) . It is due to the position of baby sitting on your sciatic nerve (hence why its soooo painful) . Tbh there is no cure ... I took plenty of baths which provided some relief ( until tried to get out of the bath) . Sitting forward on a chair to try and encourage baby to move ( i even took to taking to baby about it ......ha ha !) . It lasted for a few weeks but that can vary. Sorry can't be more helpful but just so you know i feel your pain ! you can take paracetamol but my feeling was it wouldn't touch the pain anyway .
Fingers crossed it goes soon i am terrified of it coming back x

Thanks both, I guess it's one of those niggles that we have to put up with....

I thought 14 weeks would be too early for aches and pains but I guess I've got a lot of them coming my way from this point on x

I had very bad sciatica from early on and yours does sound like it. If it originates in the buttock its called piriformis syndrome. Try googling for piriformis stretches that might help. I also found a yoga position lying on my back with one leg out straight and flat and then lift the otherstraight up and lower it outwards gently. That works while you're doing it at least.
