Hi

I'm 30 weeks with dc3. Dc1 weighed 9lb 15, my waters leaked on my due date and I was eventually induced. 3 day labour, threatened for eps, episiotomy and she got stuck. Was delivered in the McRoberts position.

Dc2 I went 8 days over and did the castor oil dosage recommended in the hypno birthing book. He was 10lb 6 but a relatively easy delivery, small tear.

I was currently measuring about an inch over the top of the curve for the 100 centile. I am huge. I have suffered badly with a bad back and a bladder prolapse since dc1. I saw a consultant at 16 weeks on account of size of previous babies and prolapse and he said they won't do any growth scans and wont induce until 12 days over.

I have a bad feeling that I can't shift that this baby is going to get stuck. It might sound silly but I'm really worried. I don't know what to do.

I would be pretty cross with what consultant said tbh. I would ask for a second opinion - I would definitely be pushing for a scan to check size in your position.

I have been told they will scan for growth if you are + or - 3 weeks (i.e. + or - 3cm fundal height) compared with the average so sounds like you definitely qualify.

MissPollysTrolleyed · 21/08/2012 13:30

Yes, I am measuring 2.5 weeks small for dates and they said it was policy to scan if the measurements are 3 weeks or more out so you should definitely get scanned (although maybe different PCTs have different policies).

PS also, have you been tested for gestational diabetes as that can be linked to big babies (or it could just run in your family...)

Thanks ladies. Midwife that measured at 28 weeks said to come back at 31 weeks instead of 33 and would refer if still measuring as big. But the referral will be to the same consultant and he was adamant that "I'll be fine" no matter what size the baby Hmm as I had the others with no epidural and dd was only stuck briefly HmmHmmHmm

Had Gtt for gestational diabeties last time and this time and was negative Confused

We just seem to have big babies. I'm only 5"7 and dh 5"10. I'm off a regular 22 bmi etc

So does that mean the consultant wouldn't refer you for a scan even if you are still way over at 31 weeks? Shock

Can you see if the midwife can send you for a scan without going via the consultant? Explain to her what the consultant has said and that even though he thinks it was all "fine" Hmm before, YOU did not think so and want to try to avoid the same thing happening again. I have found midwives can be willing to "bend the system" if they think you should be scanned.

Yes there do just seem to be some people who have big babies, I know someone like that, both her first 2 were over 10 lb and it wasn't till her 3rd that they agreed to induce "early" ie due date not overdue. And she is tiny.

Good luck.

My midwife referred me directly for a scan at 25 as I was worried about placenta function (there is a back story) consultant said not necessary but she wrote the form for me and booked me in so might be an option for you?
Your consultant sounds a bit pants and I would als for a 2nd opinion.

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 21/08/2012 14:25

Can you request a second opinion? I'm 'up north' and there is no option of going private, I wish there was so someone might listen to me Sad

Yes you can, see here. There is no legal right to a second opinion but as it says on this link it would be very rare they would refuse it. Especially since all you are asking for (at least at this stage) is a scan.

I would suggest asking the midwife if there is someone else you could be referred to (explain the consultant's attitude), or ask her to refer directly for a scan.
