BV and Metronidazole

Has anyone had Bacterial Vaginosis or taken Metronidazole in pregnancy? I'm 17+6 and discovered lots of dark blood in my pants earlier today, and I'm still bleeding now. Rang midwife who told me to go to A&E, which I did and the obstetric doctor found heartbeat with doppler (thank god!) but didn't do a scan. She suspected a vaginal or bladder infection and took a swab and urine sample and I'll call for results in 2 days. She was convinced it's Bacterial Vaginosis, which I've had before years ago but never with bleeding, and gave me Metronidazole antibiotics to take. Is it likely to be BV?? Anyone had bleeding at 18ish weeks or had BV before? Feeling v stressed!!

I haven't had either, sorry, but if you've had it before then it seems likely. Are you worried about taking the antibiotics? You could try ringing for the resuts tomorrow incase they are back, but she wouldn't have prescribed the antibiotics if it wasn't safe to take them either way. Infact, I think it is the same antib that I took after birth when breastfeeding to prevent an infection in my tear and I didn't experience any side effects and it was safe to take when breastfeeding a newborn.

Thank you piggy. I will call for results today in case they come back quickly. Have started taking the antib's anyway. Seeing my usual mw today so will talk to her too.

Hi Tugstonia

I have had BV a number of times and was treated with this drug and my symptom was post-coital bleeding each time. However when I moved to a different GP she was puzzled as she said vaginal bleeding is NOT a symptom of BV. It turned out I had co-oincidentally had BV a few times with no symptoms (all the leaflets say thin discharge and fishy odour) and actually had cervical erosion which was causing the bleeding.

I know this doesn't help on whether you can take this drug when pregnant but I would query whether the doctor's diagnosis is correct.

I'm taking a topical version of this medicine at the moment for a different reason, and asked the same of several drs. All said was fine and was used commonly to treat some condition down below, which I guess is this BV thing, during pregnancy.

Thanks for your responses. Just been to hospital again because had horrible pain and more bleeding and now saying it's a UTI and given me different antibiotics (Cefalexin) and have to take both lots... Results aren't back yet from the swab yesterday but doc today said to continue taking the original antib's anyway. Not happy about taking any antib's let alone two lots but have been reassured that they're both safe in pg so hope to god they are.

Whatsoever the doc today also said you don't normally get bleeding with BV and couldn't find a reason for the bleeding as wasn't coming from urethra either and couldn't see my cervix because it's v posterior so couldn't tell if it's cervical erosion, although she did suggest it as a possible cause.
