Baby shower - ideas please

Hello lovely ladies,

Not throwing a shower for myself before you ask as I am not pregnant but I thought this would be the best place to post this question.

Am helping my friend to organise a small baby shower for her sister (also a very close friend of mine).

Obviously food etc alone will cost us a bit which is fine but we don't want to spend a fortune on the rest - games etc.

Does anybody know of or has been to a baby shower and know of any great and quirky games, food ideas etc that will help to make it special.

Much appreciated. Smile

I enjoyed guess the baby ganes (everyone brings a baby pic of themselves) guess the babyfood (think masterchef ingredients test)

bubalou · 16/08/2012 10:14

Thank you - loving the baby pic idea - cheap yet effective Smile

A few jars of baby food sounds good too!

My friends threw a shower for me and for one of the games they bought a cheap pack of white vests from asda and some fabric pens. The guests had to design a vest for the baby and I judged the winner. It was good fun and some of the vest designs were hilarious. It was nice once ds arrived too as I could take pics of him wearing the vests and send them to the artist. They washed suprisingly well too - there are a few that have just come out to be used again for dc2 who is due in a few weeks.

Pin the dummy on the baby?

sammyleh · 16/08/2012 12:12

In the past year I've thrown a shower for a friend and last week, she threw a surprise one for me. We had some great games collectively.

1 - Pin the sperm on the egg - Draw the ovaries and womb, draw a happy little egg in there and off you go :)

2 - One handed nappy change - Pair up in two's, one uses a left hand, the other a right hand and you have to change a nappy on a doll using only one hand. Much harder than it looks!

3 - Spit your dummy out - Cheap pack of dummies, see who can spit theirs out their mouth the furthest.

4 - Guess the poop - Take a few nappies (we had 6) smear brown substances in and let your guests sniff them to guess what they are. We had chocolate spread, gravy, curry etc. It looks awful but its so funny trying not to gag at realistic looking poops. Its surprising how many brown foods we eat that look like crap!

5 - Baby food game - Cover a few jars and guess the flavour of baby food

6 - Guess the picture - Self explanatory really, eat guest brings a baby pic and everyone guesses who is who.

Have fun! xx

I did a baby shower for my best friend and we did the plain vests and fabric pens.

I also did...

The theme was a kids party so we had kids party food. The guests had to drink out of bottles (was quite funny as a few got a bit tipsy!) and the mum to be was the only one allowed to use a normal glass / mug!

My friends apartment is perfect so we all drew some pics / colouring in and wrote our names an ages and pinned them up everywhere. She needs to get used to this when baby goes to nursery!

Loads of cheap hair stuff and mum had to do our hair for the party!

A few tins of baby food. Blindfolded mum and she had to guess what they were.

Anagrams of baby stuff (I can email this over!) with a prize for the winner.

All the bits were from pound land. The vests from tesco and the pens online.

PuggyMum · 16/08/2012 12:17

Live spit the dummy and guess the poop!!

PuggyMum · 16/08/2012 12:17

Love even!

bubalou · 16/08/2012 12:28

Wow thanks!!!

They are all great ideas.

I have them written down straight away in my baby shower planning book (people don't nickname me Monica for nothing)

Sooooo excited. She's only 28 but has been trying for a baby for 5 years and
has had lots of unsuccessful IVF for the past 3 years. Has been through hell and back. It will all be worth it though when her little girl arrives! EEK!

Cannot wait to spoil her!!! Smile

I'm having a baby shower in a couple of weeks and these are the games we are planning to play:

1.Guess how many sweeties (milk bottles!) in the jar

2.Predictions for baby. Guests guess birth weight, eye colour etc. You can buy a sweet little box of these cards from here:

www.babyshowerhost.co.uk/luxury-pretty-pink-boxed-baby-shower-prediction-cards-30-p-19265.html

  1. Nappy raffle. A slightly cheeky way of getting lots of nappies! Asking each guest to bring a pack of nappies - Buy a book of raffle tickets - draw one out and the winner gets a prize. (im getting a box of Krispy Cremes!)
  1. Drawing on baby gros. As mentioned above.
  1. Guess bump size. All you need is a ball of string and a small prize.
  1. Wishes for baby.

Making a card like this:
printable.tipjunkie.com/wishes-for-baby-card-baby-shower-game/

Getting everyone to fill one in and putting them in a nicely decorated glass jar to keep forever!

Hope that helps. As you can tell I have too much time on my hands!

DollFisher · 16/08/2012 13:46

wow love these ideas! I think the hardest thing for me is going to be letting my friends organise my shower when I love planning events! :( lol

Emmiedarling · 16/08/2012 14:14

haha dollfisher. I have thrown a pregnant lady tantrum and demanded some control - I'm too much of a control freak to let others take over! ;)

bubalou · 16/08/2012 16:56

I agree Dollfisher & Emmie.

As I have said I am a bit of a Monica so although am a bit Sad I didn't get a baby shower I love planning things like this & think I would have wanted to do my own!

Thanks for the great ideas. Smile

Don't mean to jump on this thread but its related Grin I'm throwing 2 later this year and whilst I have the games sorted, does anyone have any ideas for prizes and favours? Xxxx

bubalou · 16/08/2012 17:38

Jump away Snickers Smile

I think because I'm planning on doing lots of games & the mum to be is the only preggers one their I am going to do miniature bottles of wine (they do mini jacobs creek on offer in Tesco) and I am going to do some little sweet tubs etc.

For favours it depends on your budget - I have found some websites that do really cute baby related favours such as these -
www.partycity.com/category/baby+showers/unique+favors.do

Some of these are really reasonable - you don't have to buy from here - do what I do and find some that I like and look on ebay for a bargain!

I love the button soap, the button frame and the abc block candles.

bubalou · 16/08/2012 17:40

I didn't explain that very well - I am going to do the mini wine bottles and sweets as prizes.

D'oh

Mikyahrose · 16/08/2012 18:48

Scratch cards are always a good little prize.

For the guess the milk bottles in a jar - you could have the sweets in a baby bottle?

snickers251 · 16/08/2012 18:50

Ooh fab idea I alway see the little bottles on offer in asda thank you!

I'm really going to have to stock up, the shower is for 40 plus people so could be more than one winner! Grin x

DollFisher · 17/08/2012 11:14

Ooh maybe I should do that too re preggers tantrum! Especially judging by the job that was done on my hen night - cocktail making when I hardly drink..haha they meant well!

tinyshinyanddon · 17/08/2012 11:44

Another game: drinking beer from baby bottles. Traditionally just for the men (unless you are going for a ladies only party). Anyway 2oz beer/wine in the bottles, use size 1 nipples, say go and first one finished wins. This was by far the funniest game at my shower.

pinpan · 17/08/2012 11:48

Give everyone a piece of string and make them guess how large the bump-mother's waist measurement is by wrapping it round their own waists. They will invariably guess far too large. Grin

MB34 · 17/08/2012 21:50

A couple of games that I've played are

  • guess the celebrity baby (get piccies of celebs as babies from the internet)
  • guess the celebrity's baby (get piccies of the babies of celebs from the internet! (e.g. Harper Seven, Blue Ivy etc)
  • google old wives tales of sex predictions and get people to guess if it's for a boy or girl (eg craving for salty food or protein means it's a _ or if you're asked to show your hands and you present them palms up means it's a __)
  • generation game conveyor belt - baby style

For prizes for my sister's shower, I bought small items from Poundland etc and other cheap items that you can separate into smaller items (such as candles, box of me-to-you tissues, box of malteasers, mini wines, pack of four heart-shaped post-it notes, pack of 6 of bath fizzers), wrapped them in winnie the pooh paper and made it a luck dip style winners bag. The funniest item I put in there was a vajazzle I bought from Poundland - that got everyone talking!!

HTH

LeenaJacob · 24/08/2012 14:51

I have a lovely idea for little favours, get an item that reminds you of each friend ie one of my friends has the ability to have lipgloss on her lips at all time, she could be in the desert and still have glossy lips. So I gave her a lipgloss and attached a note to it, saying how she will have to teach the little one how to put on make up etc, and I gave all the girls at the shower one of these notes that gave them each a special place in los life. I put them in little organza bags from www.babycelebrations.co.uk/christening-favours-christening-favours-diy-c-235_285_315.html and filled the rest of the bag with chocolates
