I asked my Mum and Dad for a big favour - to come and stay with us around due date (they live 400 miles away) so they could meet their first grandchild. Took my Mum about 30 seconds to work it out and then she began shreiking, hugging us both and cracking open champagne before realising I couldn't have any!

DH's Mum always makes a big thing about not wanting to be called granny (SIL winds her up about it) so we told her that she'd need to get used to it.

I had my 12 week scan around the same time as my mum's, dad's, sister's and niece's birthdays.

So I scanned my scan picture into my computer and made copies. I bought "Happy birthday Nana/Grandad/Auntie/Cousin" cards, signed them from Baby DJ (our surname) and stuck the pictures in.

They were all really shocked and I personally thought it was genius lol!

What lovely ways to tell your family! We just sat and stared at my DP's parents and asked for help as we were so shocked lol and then my dad I just said to him "your going to be a grandad" very boring really!

I'll bare those previous ideas in mind for another possible DC Smile

I just said to my sis that I had a quick question for her: aunt or auntie? She screamed down the phone. I just asked my brothers if they were ok with being called uncle from January.

My bro has a dog and we'd joked with my mum that that was the closest to a grandchild she would have for a while so I told her that she was going to have to share her granny love between the dog and a baby. She loved being told that way!

Ds was conceived on honeymoon. We got our wedding photos at the same time as our first scan and popped it in our album as the first picture. Then we just waited for the penny to drop when showing people our album! My mum took ages to click on!

So far I've only told SIL & BIL. She had an inkling (as I'd not been drinking) but I got all grave faced and said we'd been to the doctor.... and it was bad news... I was going to get fat. After a few false starts her face was a picture.

BIL guessed when he came home from work and we were sat on the sofa drinking tea. Spoil sport lol

we had the scan picture copied and framed, then wrapped it up for the in laws. with the second one i just slipped a scan picture into a card for my mum.

both methods produced tears and hugs

Just tell them - cutesy just means more effort on your part where honestly they will be ecsatic at the news however you deliver it - save yourself the effort :)

My family were all visiting for Easter and I wrapped up mugs with grandma and grandad on and a book for a special aunt for my sister. I gave them Easter eggs and said I've got an extra present for you all cue screaming hysterics and excitement as they had no idea we were trying and this will be first grandchild! Excitement has never stopped and my 25 week bump is already being extremely spoilt!

My DP had just proposed to me about a month before we found out we were pregnant and had already decided a rough date on which we'd like to get married which our families knew. We visited our parents/sisters and said 'We're afraid that we've stopped planning the wedding for a while' and all of their faces just dropped and we were greeted with questions of 'why?' and 'oh no you're not having second thoughts are you?!' And then we said 'It's because there's somebody else that needs to be there but they can't make it just yet... actually, they're in this room but you cant see them.' It took MIL all of two seconds to guess and everyone just squealed! Amazing feeling :)
