Is there any chance this pregnancy is still viable?

Hi, would appreciate any thoughts on this.

I'm 5wks +1. History of miscarriages and an ectopic, but 2 lovely dc too.

Started bleeding a little at the end of last week for a couple of days, then it stopped for a couple of days, started again yesterday a bit heavier (but still not period levels) and red as well as brown.

Had a scan yesterday but it was inconclusive, I have to have another at the end of next week.

I've been thoroughly checked at the hospital and they seem fairly confident that it's not another ectopic and I was told yesterday they expected it to be a miscarriage.

And yet... Had bloods taken today and my beta HCG levels have more than doubled in 48 hours. Admittedly, from very low to still very low, but still, it's making me wonder. B HCG was 34 last Friday, 80 on Monday, 165 today (Weds). Nurse now telling me to wait for the scan - fair enough - but also not to drink alcohol or take painkillers! So I'm now thoroughly confused - could this be a viable pregnancy after all?

The levels seem way too low to me, but they are doubling.
If anyone can shed any light on this, I'd be so grateful.

No-one can really answer your questions here but be brave, strong and hopeful through the next few days and see what happens. Maybe there is a chance that there is viability there - maye there isn't. Get lots of rest and try not to stress about it too much, you never know what's going to happen till it happens.

Thanks IfElephants, I'm sure you are right. It's just such a shock going from absolute certainty over last few days that it was over to suddenly a glimmer that it might not be? The nurse really wouldn't say anything other than wait for the scan, but I wish she'd been able to give me at least a little guidance on whether the HCG levels are anything near what they need to be.

Thank you for replying.

Like Elephants says there is no magic answer but I always find this site useful if you want to know more.

Sorry for some reason not sure if it is coming out as a link. Anyway - says HCG not as good as a scan at this stage and normal levels can vary widely. Hope that helps in some way. I know waiting is horrible but it is the only way. Take care and try and keep occupied so the days don't drag so much. Good luck.

There's always hope. x

My HCG was 29, then 45, then 145. I bled, and thought it was all over. I'd had 2 embryos returned (IVF) and I think the bleeding was either prolonged implantation or one embryo coming away. Anyway I bled again at 13 weeks but was still all fine, and is now upstairs, snoring. Hope it works out for you. X x

Thank you all for your kind replies.

Midgetm, I will take a look at that link, thanks.

BagofHolly, I'm so glad it worked out for you, that is a positive tale. I don't want to get my hopes up too much but it's lovely to hear that your scare turned out so well.
