Midwife gender prediction upon hearing heartbeat?

Just been for my 16 week appointment and my very lovely and very experienced midwife said (after hearing the heartbeat) 'oooooh I think that's a little girl'. I said how can u tell and she said that boys and girls heartbeats sound very different.

Anyone any experience with this? Was your midwife right or wrong? Doesn't matter to me either way I'm just really interested by it!!!

:)

You know the funny thing was I had preeclampsia so was in foetel assessment quite a lot and every time they put DDs heart rate on the monitor it would fluctuate between really high and low, though never dangerous, just depended whether the wee woman was awake or asleep. We didn't know the sex either it was a lovely surprise!

I'm a midwife and often like to guess what the sex is and girls are imo often faster, I always say that I have a 50/50 chance of being right though. I am sometimes wrong too!

A few years ago I was caring for a lady in labour expecting her 4 th boy, I had to ask if she was sure as I had a feeling would be a girl based on the heartbeat but she was adamant as had had 3 scans.

A lovely little girl was born, her parents were delighted once they'd recovered from the shock !

Mine knew DD was a DD from the heartbeat. Said she had an 80% success rate.

Gender determination on heart rate is not wholely accurate.

But IME (with 100% accuracy in.surveying about 12 babies of mine and friends) if your baby has a slow heart throughout it will either be a boy or a completely chilled girl.

If it has a fast heartrate it will be a girl. (I am not sure whether you will get any hyper boys as well as there weren't any in my sample).

In my case mw picked out that I was having a boy...turned out to be an uber chilled girl.

DDs heartbeat sounded like a galloping horse.
DS sounded like a train. Different rhythms, totally.

My DH is totally convinced about this. With DD (6 years ago) he used to sit in midwife appointments and scans timing the heartbeat on his watch. He was absolutely adamant baby was a girl and he was absolutely right. I'm currently 21 weeks with DC2 and at a midwife appt at 12 weeks we were listening to the heartbeat and I said to her 'look at him, timing it on his watch'. She said 'well, I've got some numbers on here (the Doppler) and I know what I think, but I'm not telling you'. I said 'oh, go on, he thinks it's another girl' and she said 'yep!'

We had our 20 week scan 2 weeks ago and this time found out....
It's another girl....!

No evidence for this at all. I checked it out earlier in my pregnancy as I was bored interested. Heart rates are different at different stages of development. Maybe some very experienced midwifes have a higher hit rate than others but like someone else says its 50/50 chance so you don't need to be mystic meg to have a stab at it. On the higher/lower heart rate thing - current bump has a higher heart rate than DC1. DC1 was a girl and this one is a boy.

IceCubes · 14/08/2012 19:51

My boy/girl twins heart beats definitely sounded different. The boy twin had a galloping heart rate, whereas the girl twin's was (as someone else said) like a washing machine! I really do think you can tell!

brettgirl2 · 14/08/2012 20:20

I was told by 2 midwives that dd2 was a boy based on this. I really wouldnt take any serious notice its just a game. As for putting in a complaint ffs get a life!

Davinaaddict · 14/08/2012 20:33

My MW correctly predicted a girl, based on her hb. I agreed with her as this pregnancy was so different to the last one, although we didn't actually find out until she made her grand entrance Grin

LimeLeafLizard · 14/08/2012 21:04

Amazingly, about half of all the guesses seem to be correct! Wink

(But I will still check the heart rate at my 16 week appt!)
