Probiotics

I'm just looking to get some opinions on taking probiotics, more specifically acidolphilus, while pregnant. I was taking it before pregnancy to control my chronic thrush and this worked for me. As soon as I found out I was pregnant I stopped taking it and have been given advice by two doctors and one registrar that 1) it doesn't work anyway to counteract thrush and 2) I shouldn't take it while pregnant as there is not enough research available to say it's definitely safe.
I would really like to continue taking it and have received advice from other pregnant friends who live in different countries to me (I am in Ireland) that it is safe and they are encouraged to take it. Any advice/opinions would be gratefully appreciated. I am currently 17 weeks pregnant.

i did. two a day. was told it was fine by midwife. no thrush o cystitis here the whole pregnancy. it would just be like eating allot of live yoghurt surely and they wouldn't advise against that!

Thanks Surfmama - I was taking two a day beforehand so was tempted to take that again. You wouldn't happen to know the strength of the ones you had? It would surely be like taking live yoghurt - they have said that to me but I would be eating it all day long to get the benefit! :-)

not sure but you ca look them up cytoplan probiotic, if you google cytoplan they will appear!

I was taking them everyday up to last week when I ran out, within a couple of days bloating and the other Blush reared their ugly heads. I haven't been told not to take them, can see no reason not to, only positives - helps digestion o foods so baby should get more goodness too!

I've been taking these every day to help with digestion. Never occurred to me to stop. Am 17 weeks.

I take one a day after my main meal (am 17w4d now). I stopped taking them when I found out I was pg just in case but got terrible digestion (diarrhea several days per week) so started taking them again as they seem to help, though not completely - have also had to reduce dairy. I figure it's better to properly digest my food so the baby gets more nutrients.

They are safe, and even advisable, as far as I know from midwife and Google.
I was having horrible trapped wind - so painful I could not sleep - and have made sure to eat live yoghurt every day and take one Bio-Kult capsule. This has kept it at bay so far!

Also, if you Google "probiotics in pregnancy" lots of positive things come up. There's not a lot that looks as positive.

I'd say if you're worried, just eat a lot of live yoghurt - it's the same thing and totally allowed while pregnant.

p.s. that's ridiculous that someone said to you that probiotics don't prevent thrush! every doctor I've seen who's put me on antibiotics has advised taking probiotics or eating yoghurt to prevent thrush!!
