Anyone ever been given antibiotics for uti then turns out they didn't have one?

Went to the docs last week with lower abdo pain and back ache. Blood and protein found in urine. Prescribed antibiotics by doc. Went home, felt pretty rubbish - achey and actually saw blood in urine.

I started taking my antibiotics and within 12 hours started to feel a lot better. Phoned up to get urine results today and turns out it was all clear and no uti!! Goodness knows what it was then?! But I feel so guilty for taking antibiotics for the past 5 days for no reason! I realise the benefits of taking antibiotics during pregnancy fat outweigh the risks when you have a uti but surely it's not good to take them when you don't need them! Has this happened to anyone else?

It happened to me when I wasn't pregnant and the doc said it wouldn't do me any harm and better than not taking them just in case I had needed them (if that makes sense). I don't think you should feel guilty as the doc will have given you antibiotics that wouldn't affect your baby

Thanks for your reply Uglymush. Feeling guilty due to the baby though and wondered how frequent it was for this to happen in pregnancy. Unborn babies are a lot more vulnerable than us unfortunately

This happened to me too. I didn't find out my results till my midwife appointment though, so had already finished my antibiotics course, a few days after finishing the antibiotics i ended up not very well at all! So didn't understand that? Hmmm!

Yes this happened to me a few months ago. Wish I'd known before the antibiotics though as they made me feel dreadful!

Difficult one as if you had a uti then you could have become unwell whilst waiting for the result. Also a negative specimen doesn't mean you didn't have one, just that they couldn't grow it in the lab. If you had symptoms and a positive dip test you probably needed treatment.

Happened to me too, a few weeks back. Docs tested sample and gave me antibiotics but when I saw MW last week, she said I probably didn't have one, was probably my SPD and that I shouldn't take antibiotics if I didn't need them (not like I asked for them!) Plus they made me feel very sick.

Hi! The tests aren't perfect, if you had symptoms of a uti you may have had one that wasn't picked up in the lab. Sometimes repeat samples are positive (before taking antibiotics!). It's when you don't have symptoms that you should wait for 2 positive samples before antibiotics - so hard to get a good, uncontaminated sample with a bump! So try not to worry, on balance the antibiotics may have been appropriate.

I just wanted to reassure you about the antibiotics, I have been on antibiotics every single day of my pregnancy (now 32w) and baby is thriving. Antibiotics are one of the few things they are really sure about giving to pregnant women, precisely because we get infections.

Please don't worry.

Hi there. Just wanted to say the same thing as Tallgiraffe really. I have been on antibiotics every day of my pregnancy too in order to prevent UTIs from happening (more likely due to kidney disease for me). Anyway, I have been told this is completely safe. So I really wouldn't worry.

Thanks ladies.

Hopefully all will be ok.
