Hyperemesis Support

We need a new thread.

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable.

I would like to thank MOH MOP Ovaltine Caramellokoalalover (I think she's changed her nickname) Fluffy, Horsey Kali and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

Evening All.

Just to encourage everyone who is contemplating having more children in the future, my first HG pg was pretty awful for 16 weeks and then bearable, my second was bad for 20 weeks but less intense, my third was a 'normal' pg and this pg is the first time I'vebeen in to hospital for rehydration and this house/bed bound. Each pg can be variable, so it may be a bit better next time, you never know.

So I went to the GP today who was good and have me a little cocktail of drugs. TMI alert, but she gave me some glycerin suppositories that have been most helpful this evening. Had to share because so many of us are struggling with constipation from ondansetron.

LucindaE · 21/12/2012 14:02

Room Oh, you poor thing, have you had locked up bowels all this while? so glad the GP gave you those things. I reccommended them to someone some posts back as you can get them over the counter too, but I know how hard it is to take in details when you are feeling like s*e (favourite expression of a girl I was working with once whom I know now was going down with Hyperemesis). In fact I admire everyone for managing to key in posts at all. The absurd thing is, you'd probably have to tell the pharmacist you weren't pregnant to get them as they cover themselves so much. You have to tell them that to get cyclezine, which you can get over the counter too. That is such a nice encouraging post you did for others to go for it a second time. For various reasons I didn't go for it a second time and I regret it now (too ancient). MY DD did moan at times about being an only.
MOP Great suggestion about dairy substitutes.
Reebok what with the longing for dairy, maybe you are aneaemic, poor you - I know if you are starved of protein you long for sweet things - so you've been in bed for three weeks, now? That is so awful and depressing. Can you bear to read stuff on a Kindle or is the shifting text too sickening? Don't despair, it must get past its worst as time passes. Kali was in bed for ages, but she did actually get better enough to insist on working for some weeks later on, though I was horrified.
Which reminds me, still horrified about poor Ghoule being forced to go back to work and use that waste paper basket outside the classroom...
Nemo I am so sorry that they didn't recommend steroids. Hugs.
I hope Everyone Isn't too bad. I agree with Nemo I am amazed that anyone can get up at all. The horrible thing is that the days between that barbaric doctor refusing meds and my dramatic puking visit to the Acpunturist are a nightmare blur to me - I believe high ketones make you confused. even had I been on the Internet then I wouldn't have been able to follow a thread, so congratulations on all you brave women who can. I seemed to be unable to take in the Acupunturist's warning me that I really should go to A and E, it's weird.

Nannyl Hope things are not too bad, and Peppa Mommins and Everyone.

I found I couldn't look st screens (tv etc) but music on my headphones (piano music of all things) actually helped to ground me and stopped the whirling in my head Confused
I started eating ALOT as soon as I started to feel the slightest bit icky with pg 4,5 &6. and didn't stop until I felt s bit better at 16-20 weeks. It seemed to stop the downward spiral. IYSWIM?
Also constantly munching strong tasting hard sweets helped with the taste and grim feeling at the back of my throat ( sorry if that's made any one feel worse)
Oh (and its probably been said before)salt & vinegar crisps, ice & flat coke/lemonade when I was HG helped a bit but not sodding Ginger

LucindaE · 22/12/2012 10:35

Twit I so agree about those crisps and especially that flat coke (in fact, I drank that because before a holiday rep had recommended it when I was puking on holiday (ironically, that was through the side effects of a homeopathic remedy for miscarriage that a homeopath had given me, which gave me morning sickness symptoms although not pregnant as I'd only just had a miscarriage; incidentally, I conceived on that holiday). I found barley sugar helpful for the foul taste, but it's hard to get hold of being a traditional sweet. I wonder if the high calorie thing works as a pre-emptive measure before the puking starts and eating becomes a memory Shock.

well said Lucinda

Im looking forward to next Christmas..... will have lots of yummy food to catch up on next year!

Im still much better than i was thankfully, and can eat meat and potatoe and bread in some forms, (not veg, or chocolate, or cream, or dairy or most fruits) but at least i should be able to have some christmas ham and turkey.

I will never ever again be pg in the run up to Xmas (thats if i ever dare to be pg again at all)

RoomForALittleOne · 23/12/2012 11:05

I made a huge mistake this morning. We are very tight financially whilst we wait for the sale to complete on a house that we own but we're renting another as we had to move for DH's training. This means that I planned to make Christmas presents like I did last year to keep costs to a bare minimum. So this morning I thought, if I didn't start today, no-one would get a present. Well, half way through making fudge, I needed to throw up. It was not good timing so I tried to ignore it. My body disagreed so I fainted instead Xmas Shock why did I even bother trying?! Clearly a stupid idea and now I have a pan full of burnt sugar.

LucindaE · 23/12/2012 12:33

Room Poor you, that was dramatic - you shouldn't be cooking in such a state!
Nannyl I am glad you can eat a little of something, but no feast for sure...I do hope Ghoule survived those dreadful last two days at work. Still can hardly believe how barbaric some employers are.Reebok are you still unable to get up?

oh Room that sounds awful

poor poor you.

gentle hugs / pats as appropriate to Ghoule and Reebok (I too cant imagine how you even worked in such a state)

I had a sicky morning this morning, but managed to eat nigellas coca cola ham and a little bit of yummy redcabbage (the only veg i have eaten since october, im thinking because its a different colour and not really like any other veg, my body refused to recognise it as veg) and kept it in and enjoyed it.

so even if thats all i eat, at least i have enjoyed one componant of Xmas food, and a month ago i didnt think i had any chance at all.

Everyone suffering, hope its your turn for it to ease off soon XXX

LucindaE · 24/12/2012 09:24

Nannyl Another lovely message of support. That is wonderful about the cabbage!
Room I hope you are just a tiny bit better? and Reebok and Ghoule who should have a teacher's medal for 'courage beyond the call of duty'...
Thinking of everyone who is suffering through this Festival. Hold on, you will have a better present than anyone in a few months!
Cyber hugs to all.

Thanks guys although i was signed off from work two weeks into my hyperemesis so not worked since.

Lucinda, had a good couple of days but it's back with avengence since yesterday...already thrown up 4 times this morning and feeling so rubbish. Now constant nausea is back. I want it to end!

Merry Xmas to all. Hope u can have a better one than me x

CuriouslyChristmassyColaHam · 24/12/2012 17:40

Hello, not sure if this is the best place to ask this.

Just been prescribed cyclizine. I took the tablet and then threw up within 30 minutes. The bottle says take every 8 hours. Will my body have absorbed it or should I take another one?

LucindaE · 24/12/2012 18:02

Curiously I think the rule of thumb is, if you can see remnants of the tablet in the vomit, then take another...I don't honestly know i you can up cyclazine does safely or not, so had best not say. Poor you, you are suffering for sure!
Reebok Oh dear, I do hope tommorow is better, hugs. But once those good days start coming, then that is a sure sign that there will be more of them. I hope you don't have to spend Christmas day in bed.
I hope Everyone is somehow managing. There was a lot of comedy with my making mistakes as I made Christmas food, good for a laugh, but as I don't want to sicken anyone I won't mention details.

I was managing morning sickness much better this time, but norovirus has tipped me over the edge. I will just wait and start again in the morning.

LucindaE · 24/12/2012 18:45

Curously

I have asked my dr the very same question.
My GP and hospital consultant both said that i can only take another if i vomit it straight back and can see the tablet...

if not im not allowed to take another

and ideally the tablet does need to stay in for at least 1 hour. (I take mine then lie down in bed for an hour if i have any doubt about my abolity to not vom for a whole hour)

Merry Christmas everyone.... and next year we can look forward to a full Christmas dinner, with alcohol and a little baby buy our sides.

2013 maybe tough for a bit, but i bet in the long run it will be worth every vomit Wink

ghoulelocks · 24/12/2012 22:34

well a surprise update as to why I've been quiet...

4 weeks early my waters popped at work! I then had the full works of a surprise group b strep result on the computer, no start to labour, induction, fast labour (3 pushes), tiny baby iced off with a pph and transfusion.

good excuse for going quiet?!

ghoulelocks · 24/12/2012 22:35

oh nd yes the vomiting stopped... until I reacted to the drugs to stop the pph!

CuriouslyChristmassyColaHam · 25/12/2012 07:07

Congratulations Ghoule, hope you and baby have a lovely Christmas.

nannyl · 25/12/2012 08:15

congratulations ghoule

what a perfect present... a baby and the end of HG

Merry Christmas everyone

LucindaE · 25/12/2012 09:39

Ghoule I am so happy for you! what, as others say, a Christmas present! Xmas Smile Thanks Thanks. Wine Smile I have to confess to ignorance about the 'b strep' situation - not sure what that is - but hugs to you. I hope you and baby and family have a wonderful Chrsitmas. I hope work feel very very very guilty...
Christmasy and Ghoule I hope a lot better today.
Waves to Nannyl.
Everyone Hoping you have as good a festival as you can in the circumstanes, and all will be different next year, as Nannyl says. Hugs to all.

RoomForALittleOne · 26/12/2012 13:44

Congratulations Ghoule. Sorry you had a rough delivery but at least HG is over and you have your baby here safe and sound. Just how tiny was your baby at 4 weeks early?

ghoulelocks · 26/12/2012 21:46

She was an ok size, 5lb 12oz, but after a previous 9lb baby she's like having a dolly. Today she opened her eyes.
