Hyperemesis Support

LucindaE · 07/08/2012 12:21

We need a new thread.

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable.

I would like to thank MOH MOP Ovaltine Caramellokoalalover (I think she's changed her nickname) Fluffy, Horsey Kali and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

Good morning Team Green

Reebok, sounds like my GP only she believes eating a cracker before I rise would solve everything.

I've decided that I'm not getting out of bed today

Reebok · 07/12/2012 12:47

Haha ghoule! Must admit the only time I've managed to get out of bed is when I need loo...and that's very rare.

Must admit though this whole Kate thing has helped my doc see how serious I am when I say I feel sick. I almost burst into tears. He did try more this time to figure out how to help me only refused to listen to any advice I gave him concerning drugs.

He's signed me off for 4 weeks and said he won't hesitate to sign me off again once this period is over. And my school are actually being very supportive and are genuinely worried about me. Their reaction to HG has been more sympathetic this time round.

Reebok · 07/12/2012 12:49

Btw if it's another day in bed for you all, maybe do what I'm doing. Am watching reruns of goodness gracious me on YouTube. Cheering me up a bit!

nannyl · 07/12/2012 13:00

oh reebok poor you

did the receptionish seriously say try ginger? I think i would suggest to her that she gets on with her job at the computer, and stops giving old wives tales to people who are seriously sick and need medical help.

Its one thing when some random stranger tells you to try ginger but what does your medical condition have to do with her

agh rant over

im pleased you made it to the drs, and im sorry that you are so poorly.
Im amazed at the number of people who now say "oh youve got what kate has"... this included all the nursery staff when i collected DD from nursery this morning, and the lady who ran my first aid course yesturday.... everyone seems very excited to "know someone with the same" except for me!!!!!
at least it is raising awareness though, and that has to be a good thing Smile

great that you have been signed off again too, thats what happened to me last time, i think i was signed off for a week twice, then after that it was for a month at a time.

gentle hugs / pats

LucindaE · 07/12/2012 16:21

Reebok Ginger? Did the receptionist think that a witty remark? She wouldn't be so inclined to laugh if she had it herself, for sure. *&%$! It is so annoying that Dr won't give stronger meds, particularly since you've been in hospital already. They give what is Zofran over in the US Ondanestron here regularly, while it's record of safety isn't as long as that of Cylizine and Stemetal, there've still be no abnormalities reported from people on a cocktail of drugs, including that. I don't know how the Dr has never heard of it being used. How often is the vomiting now? Hope OH remembers the kesosticks for you.
Ghoule Still worried about those ketones (clucks and fusses). Lol about 'team green' Envyoh dear, the Xmas Envy one is hardly appropriate, I shouldn't think anyone feels up to putting on a Christmas hat!

I gave chemist a call as they know me well. None in stock but will let me know when there is. I said pretty much same thing to doc lucinda after looking at website link MoH kindly put up. He just said he has heard of no such evidence and wouldn't feel right considering my history. Vomiting n

Reebok · 07/12/2012 16:40

Oops posted before finishing...vomiting down to now 3/4 times in evening and once in morning. Better than before. Day is spent nauseous so I tend to sleep it off.

@nannyl thank you for the gentle pats :)

LucindaE · 07/12/2012 16:52

Reebok They should order them for you. Do they say how long that will be? Glad vomiting isn't as frequent as it was, but it still needs to be watched.

A few days hopefully. Yeh am watching it and hoping that once hubby gets me the metoclopramide I will feel bit better. My mum bless her is sending me soup and food for hubby. She's not well herself but is still worried for me and helping out as she had it 6 times. Says was worst with me! Maybe my comeuppance!

EsteraEmmerson · 07/12/2012 17:27

@Lucinda & @Reebok: Very sad indeed. I wish I had known about that clever receptionist's comment before posting my letter yesterday. It was addressed to the Duchess of Cambridge.

MOH100 · 07/12/2012 21:39

reebok that is dismal on so many counts. Your doc sounds like a right genius, so he's never heard of anyone having zofran? He doesn't get out much then does he? Have you tried calling the pregnancy sickness support helpline to ask them to talk to your doctor for you? The number is 024 7638 2020, it's an answering machine service but it's checked daily and someone calls you back. There are gps who can speak to your doctor and tell him whats what. They can also arrange for him to speak to a consultant. If that doesn't work, ask for a referral to a hospital consultant. Tell your doctor that you know there are more drug options, you know they are available on the nhs in the uk and you know of other women who have had them and if he won't prescribe them you want to be referred to someone who will. If you pm me I can check the PSS HG-friendly doctors list and see if there's someone in your area who will do a better job for you.

estera just to let you know that PSS are working on guidance documents at the moment. One of the trustees met with a group of early pregnancy consultants recently in the midlands and they're working on guidelines which they are going to propose be adopted nationally. PSS are also working on educational materials for gps and midwives and using the recent publicity to give as many interviews for as many different media as possible. They are always looking for volunteers if you wanted to offer, you can sign up on their website.

LucindaE · 08/12/2012 09:51

Estra For sure it is maddening!
MOH Brilliant advice, as usual! Why didn't thickhead Lucinda think of that? Reebok That is the way ahead!
Hope Peppa and Nannlyl and others are OK.
Yank Sorry, I have a horrible feeling I rudely ignored a post of yours in my horror about Peppa's doctor refusing admission some days ago, poor you if the puking has started, as ever, will say, do watch out for dehydration (don't mean to be bossy, sorry! ). How is it now? I hope bowels sorted out, at least?

Thanks moh will pm you once I figure out how. Unfortunately its been another day in bed for me. Drugs have cut vomiting down to 2 today but still have the dry retching and constant nausea. Making me feel like a zombie. Really wish this would end. Finally made it to 8 weeks today and feels like I've been sick for years.

LucindaE · 09/12/2012 09:34

Reebok Just click 'message poster' next to one of MOH's posts on here. You poor sweet, thank goodness for MOH's advice! I can only send hugs - do you find the sweetness of fizzy drinks left to to still helps that dreadful tearing nausea at all?
Ih ope everyone is managing. Ghoule are you out of bed?
Hope everyone is managing. It's extra bad on this run up to Christmas.

PeppaPigStinks · 09/12/2012 09:40

Hi. Sorry to hear everyone is feeling so poorly. I am home and touch wood, haven't been sick again but have felt very sick. I am however feeling extremely drained and worn out - I don't have the energy to do anything. I have been given cyclizone and ondanistron (sorry if they are spelt wrong). I think the cyclizone knocks me out as everytime I take it I fall asleep. The other one is great and I feel a little more effective.

Do you think this exhaustion is just early pregnancy usual stuff or because I was so dehydrated?

I also keep getting massive period pain and back pain. So much so I am thinking of seeing the dr tomorrow. I've usually got a good pain threshold but this makes me stop!! Is ten weeks to early for braxton hicks? It's baby number two! Wink

PeppaPigStinks · 09/12/2012 09:42

Reebok - I too have had a lot of Kate comments! And the consultant in hospital who was treating me and who was very understanding suggested try ginger!!

Reebok · 09/12/2012 11:10

Thanks Lucinda. Coke doesn't seem to work anymore. Just makes me want to burp or a funny taste in my mouth which in turn makes me vomit. Flat lucozade is giving me a bit of energy but only for like 5 seconds. This really does feel like eternity! I'm so thirsty and fed up! Nothing quenches my thirst and keep dreaming of chugging a full glass of ice cold water...oh if only!

Peppa, the exhaustion is probably from the dehydration. I'm feeling it too. If you are in serious pain, I'd get that checked out!

Btw does anyone know what I can do to combat this horrid saliva and constant phlegm (sorry for tmi). I have an increases in phlegm as I'm asthmatic. Makes me wanna gag!

Reebok · 09/12/2012 11:11

Peppa that's really annoying! Why do people not understand?? Ginger does not work!!! It just increases the gag reflex for me!

PeppaPigStinks · 09/12/2012 11:14

Indeed!! I have a very bad cold at the moment so feel your pain regarding the phlem- sounds gross but I just spit it out in a tissue. In the plus side I can't smell or taste a thing- I think that is why I haven't been sick again to be honest Wink

Reebok · 09/12/2012 11:24

I do but it's just constant and makes me want to throw up more. So fed up! I just want to feel normal again! Sometime I forget there's a baby in me and reason why I'm feeling so awful. Hard to stay positive when you feel like utter crap! Arghhhhhhhh!!!!

PeppaPigStinks · 09/12/2012 11:27

Yes it is. Very hard. Here is a hug! How many weeks are you?

Reebok · 09/12/2012 11:35

Thanks Peppa. 8 weeks! The thought of this lasting another 32 makes me want to scream! What about you?

PeppaPigStinks · 09/12/2012 11:47

Ten weeks and likewise! The thought of it going on is horrible. But for some people it does stop

Reebok · 09/12/2012 11:55

Really praying it ends soon. My sister was one of the lucky ones. Eased at 14 weeks and stopped completely by 18 weeks. Mum on the other hand had it for pretty much 9 months. Oh how I hope I don't take after mum!
