Hyperemesis Support

We need a new thread.

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable.

I would like to thank MOH MOP Ovaltine Caramellokoalalover (I think she's changed her nickname) Fluffy, Horsey Kali and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

yes thats the one!!!!!!!

+4 keytones (im sorry to read that)... could you go in right now?
hope you feel better soon xxxx

LucindaE · 29/11/2012 21:05

Ghoule My goodness, yes, so agree with Nannyl that is so high that you need to go in now to play safe. Poor you, it must be awful and I hope the IV stops that dreadful battery acid weeing.
Nannyl Poor you too, it might be worth asking for Ondansetron if your still puking on Cyclizine? I can imagine you're reluctant to give up the Cyclezine if it's helping at all, but that is the one they usually start people on before going on to others. Lots of people have been on cocktails of drugs on here, as there are a lot of safe drugs.

I'm sure I'm hydrated ok, as when I wasn't I had dry lips, couldn't urinate and a fast heart rate. None of which I have now. I think it's pure food related from not keeping food down. I can even wee ok (aside from the battery acid bit!). Obviously if I get a headahce, dryness/ stop weeing/ fast hear rate etc I'll be straight up there. Depressing but I've had it enough times to feel the difference. I've found with the sticks I hit 4+ after only about 1.5 days with no food down.

nannyl · 29/11/2012 22:15

thank you Lucinda

your posts are always so kind and supportive XXX

ghoulelocks i hope you at least go to a Dr tomorrow morning to get a drs opinion.... i think if your heart rate is fast and you stop weeing you are very very very dehydrated, and shouldnt get that dehydrated before you admit yourself

(I also understand how you can feel and just know when you are "ok enough" and not)

It is my drs policy to advise admission with 3+ keytones, and to do there very very best to insist you go to hospital (which is of course always ultimately your choice) at 4+ or more. (been discussing this alot over the past few weeks Wink)

MotherofPearl · 30/11/2012 16:51

Ghoulelocks, I know one of the regulars on the thread Kali, who is hopefully just had or about to have her baby, was in a similar situation i.e. very high ketones but not because of dehydration but starvation because of not keeping food down. She was prescribed some kind of special food replacement drinks, I think they're called ensure or encal or something like that? Anyway, they seemed to make a big difference for her so might be worth asking about that.

kalidasa · 30/11/2012 21:45

Hello all. Baby Joseph Henry born at 6.13 pm on Wednesday evening. Went into hospital on Wednesday morning in a wheelchair because my SPD was so bad but walked out of hospital today without even my crutches. As for the HG, I threw up a couple of times in labour, and they put me on a drip in the middle because I had 4+ ketones apparently (surprise surprise - I am ketone queen! I'm sure I generate them unusually fast!) but I haven't been sick since he was born. Felt queasy still for the first 12 hours afterwards but am now loving the huge novelty and relief of not feeling sick anymore for the first time since the end of March. Everything tastes amazing and I think I am almost as excited about eating as Joseph himself, who is incredibly greedy and wants to nurse constantly. Have had only 6 hours sleep in the last four days and have actually started to hallucinate as a result but even so feel fantastic relief. I'm convinced I even look completely different - like myself again - though DP says this is my imagination! Really feel like I have been given myself back along with the added bonus of a baby!

ghoule high ketones can definitely be chronic starvation even if you aren't/are no longer dehydrated. This was a big prob for me after a while. I do think it is still worth treating the ketosis aggressively - partly because the ketosis itself is bad for you and the baby (puts a strain on organs etc) but also because it itself makes the nausea and sickness worse. MOP is right, I ended up on food replacement drinks called Ensure (the strongest hospital-only Ensure ones which can totally replace food). They are a bit revolting and I did throw them up like everything else but even so they are so concentrated that it really did make a difference. Worth considering. I had them prescribed but you can also order them online.

pineapple I was also asked to do a GTT at some point around the middle of the pregnancy, for no clear clinical reason that I could see. I knew that if I tried to do it I would certainly just vomit the Lucozade or whatever it is they give you anyway, as at that point I vomited the first thing I ate/drank every morning without fail. So I just rang up and said there was no point me doing the test at that stage. I didn't feel bad about this at all because if you just throw up the sugary drink immediately the test doesn't work anyway. I suppose you might feel differently if you think there's any chance you could keep it down, but otoh you don't want to trigger really bad vomiting if you have things just about under control.

Courage to all those still battling in the trenches of HG! It really is like nothing else. I was in chronic pain with the SPD, on crutches for months and could barely even stand for the final week (once the baby engaged) but to be honest it was nothing compared to the horror of the sickness. But it does end and you get yourself back.

Congratulations Kalidasa Smile

BarmeeMarmee · 01/12/2012 02:30

Kali welcome to the pink castle Grin I'm glad your horror is over too now.

Hello to everyone else. Sorry to see its been quite busy on here. Have been catching up during a feed. Hope everyone is doing ok today.

LucindaE · 01/12/2012 10:49

Kali I am so so happy that you have arrived at the Pink Castle. You suffered horribly,I am so glad you've got your prize! ThanksThanksThanksWineBrew. Thanks for such a positive post for those who are still in the depths!
Now you can enjoy baby Smile and know what a strong character you are.
Nannyl Thank you, I'm glad my posts give a bit of comfort.

Ghoule I hope you're being rehydrated?
Mop waves madly.
Hope Everyone is coping today?
It is naive of me, but it still surprises me how few people seem to have heard of Hyperemesis. I mentioned it to a woman the other day who was carrying on about how wonderful it is to be pregnant, nobody has a right to moan about feeling ill etc and she stared at me as if I was quite mad.

I had never herd of hyperemisis until i had it

it amazes me how many people dont seem to understand that it is different to, and nothing like morning sickness....

and that HG is NOT Morning Sickness!!!!

Now whenever i here that anyone is pg, my first Q is how are you, no really... are you ok?.... because i am NOT ok when pg, and i naturally assume nor will anyone else be.

and i dont care how "lucky" i am to be a mummy, i still HATE being pg!!!!!!

LucindaE · 01/12/2012 13:50

Nannyl I so agree, and it's a shame that women with this horrible thing can't enjoy being pregnant. What made me so cross with the woman was the arrogance coming from ignorance Angry.
I always feel amazed when women say they weren't sick at all. What????

Kali, so many congratulations! I'm so pleased to hear your news and that you are finally, after such an utterly wretched pregnancy, sickness-free. I well remember that feeling post-birth, where the lingering nausea goes and you feel literally like a new person. It's like a horrible fog just clears and you feel elated. Hope everyone still suffering can hang onto that thought, even though it's so tough. Enjoy these special early days with Joseph - what a lovely name. x

Reebok · 01/12/2012 19:32

Hi all, can I join? Feel like I'm dying :'(

nannyl · 01/12/2012 20:06

yay you found us rebok

we wont tell you to just eat ginger biscuits and get on with life Wink

Reebok · 01/12/2012 20:09

Lol nannyl. Eurgh why did you have to say ginger? I hate that word! makes me nauseous! Feeling a lil better after speaking to ladies going through it. About an hour ago, I was puking and crying because no one understood me.

nannyl · 01/12/2012 20:27

LOL

i have not been able to touch a ginger biscuit since last pregnancy.... i dont think ill ever eat one again.

Reebok · 01/12/2012 20:29

Lol It worked on me for about an hour...or so I thought! Never again. How far along are you nannyl?

Littleplasticpeople · 01/12/2012 20:48

Yay, congratulations kali! Thanks enjoy feeling normal again!

Yes Lucinda, i did suffer right to the end- back on a drip at 36 weeks Shock it obviously was worth it though and now I'm thoroughly enjoying baby Josephine who is already 7 weeks old - if only pregnancy went as fast as this!

Off to the dentist this week- vomiting almost everyday for 8 months certainly took its toll on my teeth Sad

Sorry to all of you suffering, it will end.

nannyl · 01/12/2012 20:51

Reebok im 11+2 ish (dating scan on monday)

Tay1981 · 01/12/2012 21:28

kali So many congratulations Thanks Enjoy! Enjoy! Enjoy! You have been so brave - nows your chance to indulge!! You thoroughly deserve it.

Have to admit to being very Envy though!

I had actually stopped being sick at all for about a week - then DD brought home a lovely cold - kindly passed it on to me and DH and now morning vomit is back with vengeance. Am sporting lovely broken blood vessels around my eyes this morning to add to the aesthetic delight of the exzema and spots. Hopefully I will follow in kali's footsteps and start to look like myself again once baby comes. Can't really complain though as am sooooooo much better than I was. Had a scan the other day and apparently the little blighter weighs 2lbs6oz already. Looks like I'm heading for 9lbs+ again.

Lots of sympathy to those feeling crap still. I was at my worst with DD1 at this time of year and it was pretty horrible. Every Iceland advert had me vomming in the bucket next to the sofa. They still make me feel nauseous to this day. Hang in there x

PineapplePol · 01/12/2012 21:54

Kali how wonderful to hear your news and that the magic of birth has totally transformed you back to a human being again. Congratulations and the very best wishes to all 3 of you. Thank you also for finding the time to respond about the GTT. I'm feeling very nervous about it. Was sick this morning because I didn't get a cup of tea and biscuit down me in time. I've resolved to just get on with it and when the inevitable happens, ensure it is all down the first person to mention ginger. The reality is I will feel to ill for that, but it is the thought that is keeping me going;) I'm just counting down the days and praying baby will come early. At least the SPD is under control with help from the osteopath and now the countdown to Christmas has begun, I'm hoping the days will pass more quickly.

My community midwife was asking if I'd joined a SPD support group and I havn't, but I did tell her all about this one and what a help it has been to me over the last few months. Thank you everyone for your words of wisdom, encouragement, and above all, your understanding.

LucindaE · 02/12/2012 12:44

Reebuck Hope I've spelled that right - welcome. Poor you, are you on meds yet? Have you got a sympathetic GP? Hugs, one does feel as if one will die.
Nannyl How are things?
Plastic Lovely to hear you are so happy now and baby Josephine is doing fine. And now Kali's got a Joseph.
Tay Really sorry about cold making you sick again, how foul.
Pinapple You poor thing, still suffering. So you are going for that test and it's brave of you, I don't see how one can keep that drink down, but best of luck. I'm so glad the thread has helped you. You haven't moaned much, you're obviously too brave for your own good. So was Kali she would go in to work and then I'd cluck and flap (I'm mother hen).
Sorry to anyone rudely ignored.

Hello

for me things arnt that bad today.... i vomited my breakfast in 2 sessions (as per usual) and have for the first time in, i cant even remember when, eaten a lunch (cheese on toast, i felt like it)

I am currently in bed trying desperately to keep my cyclizine in me for 1 hour.... im 9 mins into the hour now, and im not convinced i will make it to the end but we will see.

We have been to get our Xmas tree this morning so would like to decoarate it this afternoon..... im really going to try hard to force myself to do it.
Then scan tomorrow..... NO IDEA how im supposed to drink a pint in the our before... im lucky if i manage 1 carton (200ml) ribena in the whole entire day.... and there are no other clear fluids that i can stomach at the moment either

Reebok have you gone to hospital?

hope the mummies are enjoying their babies..... and us suffering are 1 day closer to meeting ours Smile

LucindaE · 02/12/2012 13:27

Nannyl Poor you, two breakfast vomits, just what you don't need. Cyber hugs always on offer . I vaguely remember that if your about eleven weeks, the baby is big enough for them to be able to scan without your retaining water, but how foul it is trying. Your more of an expert than me now, this is your second, but so you don't need me to remind you to take those plastic bags just in case of need.
Is poor Reebok in need of being admitted?
