I have been taking multivitamins before I was pregnant and only stopped yesterday, I am 5+ 4 now I have only just realised that there vitamins contained vitamin A
Also just read that excess vitamin a can cause birth defects, I'm so worried that I have damaged by baby before I've even got started really need some reassurance please

If multivitamins were that dangerous they would ban them. Worrying is part of pregnancy - welcome!

Worriedsick123 · 03/08/2012 19:04

There was even a warning on the packet, god I'm so stupid, am I worrying for no reason?

the placenta doesn't supply the baby for the first few weeks AFAIK, it lives off the sac first, so they won't have been passing to the baby for the last 3 weeks, maybe a couple of days if that!

lisad123 · 03/08/2012 19:06

Check the packet as in all likely hood it's a small amount of vit A

leelteloo · 03/08/2012 19:09

I am not an expert but I know that actually many of the vitamin supplements people take are not fully absorbed anyway. I just had a quick look about vitamin a and it said very high doses could be harmful. So I would imagine one vitamin tablet a day will give you the rda, which will not be a high dose and therefore be harmless.
I know how hard it is in early pregnancy not to worry about everything but try and relax tonight and call your mw in the morning for reassurance. X

Worriedsick123 · 03/08/2012 19:15

Thank you for your reassurance, have been googling foods rich in vitamin a liver and pâté come out the highest which I haven't had, milk which I don't drink, tastes foul and have gone off tea and coffee but didn't have much milk in them anyway, maybe had chicken one or twice but not every day.
The tablets say they contain 800mcg (RDA) the most a pregnant woman should have in a day is 3000mcg or 10,000IU I just hope I am under that.
Stupid stupid stupid!

I remember reading a thread on here about a woman whod eaten copious amounts of liver through pregnancy which everyone was aghast at as it has high levels of vitamin A and is recommended to avoid. Her midwife told her she had the best iron levels shed ever seen and she must be doing something right! She had a very healthy pregnancy despite not following advice.

What im trying to say dont be too hard on yourself babys are very robust! Be kind to yourself you are only trying to do whats best for the little one

Worriedsick123 · 03/08/2012 21:32

Thanks Dorothy just can't believe how stupid I've been, I've calmed down now but still worried, hopefully I've stopped taking the vitamins in time it's all I can hope for.
It's good to know someone was fine after that amount of vitamin A
(75,000IU in liver) thanks for sharing that.

You will do lots of things during the nine months and subsequently that you lie awake at night worrying over. When the baby arrives you will have a whole new set of things to angst over! its easier said than done to relax but cherish this time it will go so fast.

Worriedsick123 · 04/08/2012 09:38

Thank you again, I was up half the night worrying about it, and have come to the conclusion that 800 mcg out of 3000mcg isn't all that much, I don't think I have eaten a particularly rich vitamin A diet and would hopefully be under the 3000 threshold.
And also like silkysmith said the baby has its own supply for the first 3 weeks, so thanking this into account I think I should be ok will mention it to my mw when I get my booking in appointment and hopefully she will be able to reassure me further. Thank you all for your kind words and reassurance.

Hope you get a good sleep tonight. X

PeshwariNaan · 04/08/2012 22:03

Check the type of Vit A - beta carotene is harmless to baby, retinols are the bad kind. Either way, don't worry.

Haylebop12 · 04/08/2012 22:11

AFAIK the baby diesnr live off placenta until between 9-11 weeks. Don't worry! If your concerned right your gp

Haylebop12 · 04/08/2012 22:13

Doesnt*

Wheels79 · 04/08/2012 23:10

I take a multivitamin due to a vitamin D deficit. When I had my first pregnancy appointment with my GP I took the bottle with me. She checked the contents and was happy for me to proceed. Also 800 mcg vitamin A.

Giddypants · 05/08/2012 11:44

Thank you so much especially wheels I was still worried despite my rationalising need to just relax and enjoy every stage of this pregnancy.

Giddypants · 05/08/2012 11:45

Oops outed myself! Blush

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 05/08/2012 11:55

OP I'm 21 weeks and yest had an ice cream from the ice cream man completely forgetting that I wasn't allowed.

What I'm trying to show is that we all do things we 'shouldn't without realising it. You need to forgive yourself and move on. Stressing will do far more damage to you baby IMHO.

Also I'm pretty sure the placenta doesn't take over until 9-10 weeks before that the baby lives off the 'sac' so you wouldn't have passed much on anyway!

Giddypants · 05/08/2012 12:16

Thanks Stacey I had a chat with my friend who is a doctor, and he said that they have to put these kind of warnings on tablets because it's a theoretical risk, which very rarely happens in practice, but they have to cover themselves just incase. Thanks for replying im starting to chill out more listening to relaxation CDs and the such.
