Early Pregnancy Scan

Hi Guys,

I would really appreciate it if someone can help my worried little head :(.

I am 5 +2 weeks pregnant and I had a early pregnancy scan today as I was having pain n lower groin,

The midwife said the sac was in a perfect place but only measured 5.4mm x 5.2mm. From what i've googled (I know I shouldn't have) it seems that is really small for a gestation sac for 5 weeks.

I had a MC in April this year so this pregnancy im very anxious.

Thank you all very much for taking the time to read my post. {thanks}

Hi. Try not to worry. 5 weeks is so early on and everything changes very fast at this early stage. Are you having another early scan? Just asking because I am 5 weeks and had a scan yesterday and I don't think the sonographer even measured the sac, it was so small! But I'm going back in 2 weeks and hopefully then everything will be a bit bigger and maybe even a heartbeat.

I know it's hard to not think the worst when you've had it happen in the past. But try to stay calm for now. You are pregnant!

Hi Aik hun thank you for replying to me. Its horrible not knowing and I do take comfort knowing there is someone else in my position. I stupidly asked for the notes when the lady said all looked good and the sac was in the right place and perfectly shaped. She re booked she booked me in for 2 weeks time as well where she said she would see a heartbeat.

These notes have caused me even more worry as it says:

Approx: 4-5 weeks sac, ( when I know i'm over 5 weeks)
To early to see viable pregnancy (I've seen other posts where people have seen a yolk sac)
Gestation sac 5.2mm x 5.4 mm!! ( It should be at least 6 mm)

I only get this from what i've read though. I have more symptoms this time and I had an early pregnancy scan with last MC and she didnt even see a sac so I know this little bean has gone further.

I worry so much lol I drive my family mad.

Keeping everything crossed for you will you let me know how your scan goes in a few weeks time?

Again thank you for getting back to me xx

Hi there - I would try not to worry too much at this stage. Easier said than done I know. I had a very early scan with my first pregnancy at 5 weeks and they said that all looked ok but I would have to go back two weeks later to confirm whether it was a viable pregnancy. When they say Too early to see viable pregnancy, I think this just means that they haven't yet seen a heartbeat. Once they see a heartbeat then that is considered a viable pregnancy. And you're not going to see that at 5 weeks. I went back two weeks later and there was the heartbeat. So - at this stage, try not to worry and hopefully when you go back in two weeks you'll see the heartbeat and the viable pregnancy box will be ticked. Keeping everything crossed for you.

I wouldn't get hung up on the measurement, the margin of error measuring something so small on an ultrasound scan picture can be more than 0.5mm.

I've had two scans, close together, and the due dates given are nearly a week apart. My consultant said this was to be expected, as no two people are going to get exactly the same measurement when the sac is so very small.

Rockchick1984 · 02/08/2012 21:53

Is it possible you ovulated later than you thought? I know I ovulate later than day 14, a few days can make a massive difference to the size at this early stage. Fingers crossed everything is alright for you :)

Thank you so much guys. I really have been worrying and it is my fault because if I didn't insist on having a copy of the notes then I would not be in this position now.

I think because of experience a mc only a few months ago i'm more paranoid and looking into everything.

Thank you again guys means a lot to me as Hubby is getting a little annoyed with me as I keep getting upset over nothing really. Your info has helped me relax alot.

Good luck for your pregnancies and I will keep you updated.

Hi there,
Sorry for very late post. Pregnancy induced insomnia/exhaustion cycle! Just wanted to let you know that I had an early scan at 5 weeks and the doctor said she couldn't see anything at all apart from something that looked to her like a blood clot rather than a pregnancy! So we were given the 'pregnancy of unknown location' leaflet and sent home. I was convinced it was all over. They told me to come back a week later to do another scan and it turned out all was fine and there was a yolk sac and everything and then the week after that there was a heartbeat. I thought I was sure on my dates but it turns out I had an unusually long cycle that month and ovulated 4 days after I normally would which explained the first scan. Got my 12 week scan now on Monday and am terrified about that. I can't stop googling 12 week scan photographs and DH keeps telling me to stop! Anyway, good luck but I'm sure it will be fine.

Im so happy to hear it worked out for you after getting that deviating news. I done them clear blues and it was 3+ so I was sure I was over 5 weeks they cause more worry than there worth them tests.
Thank you for al your replies. I had a slight spotting in the night but no cramps and it was not much at all. I will still give doctors a call this morning I just don't want them to think im a pain lol.

I was just confused with the measurements i'm all googled out.

Stop googling! I also had 3+ on a CBD and I had spotting over the weekend. We are pregnancy twins. Try to just think in the moment. Right now, you are pregnant. Don't race ahead with what might happen tomorrow or in a week or whatever. Right now, you are pregnant.

LauraPalmer · 03/08/2012 07:58

Step away from Dr. Google! [sternface]

It's quite likely that even if you're sure of your OV date, implantation could've taken longer which would push your dates back.

At this stage you've seen all the right signs at the right time.

Try to give yourself a break from the mental gymnastics for the time being.

LauraPalmer · 03/08/2012 08:01

And CBD tests are notoriously unreliable for exact dating - I've known of MNs who've gotten different %23-of-weeks readings with the same batch of wee!

LauraPalmer · 03/08/2012 08:02

number-of-weeks readings

keys27 · 03/08/2012 08:07

Thank you guys I am going to take a step back now and try to relax lol. It's my own fault I should never of asked for the results. She said the sac was perfect and there is a baby there they know what there taking about. Just in writing that cant confirm a viable pregnancy without the heartbeat.

Again thank you all so much
