Hi ladies juSt wondered if anyone has ha a sweep, firstly what's it like? And secondly how effective is it? Midwife said as this is my third it's likely to work but I don't know whether that's the "telling me what I wanna hear" trick. Thank you :)

Hi, I had a sweep yesterday my first ever one! This is also my third. I am overdue so figured my body should b more then ready. To b really honest don't know how effective it was as I didn't feel a thing ? No discomfort nothing, nowt? She said I was 2cm and cervix slightly high she didn't offer me another one just said I will get an induction date . Well had sweep yesterday at 3pm and had a bit of cramping and back ache for about 2hours after. Now nothing no show no nothing so I'm kinda guessing it's not worked. But good luck to you hope yours is successful .

I had a sweep, but about 12 hours after contractions started. It didn't seem to do much tbh as it was another 2.5 days till I gave birth. Hmm I don't really remember it being painful, I think it was just uncomfortable.

Grin claire being swept - he he

Being induced at 39 wks so MW said I could get a couple o' sweeps in before. Hope it doesn't hurt, doesn't sound like it does too much?

Pootle78 · 01/08/2012 20:35

I was induced as had a big baby (didn't work, twice!)

Also ended up having 5 sweeps over 11 days which the last one worked (on saturday night, ds appeared Sunday morning) be careful of midwives with small hands Grin !!!

cheeky can't believe you're still here!

I had 2 failed sweeps when I was overdue with DS, cervix was still tight shut. went in to be induced and the cervix softened enough to do a proper sweep. and boy, was it a proper sweep! I was crawling up the bed! it does bloody hurt but I'm sure this got things kick started more than the drugs in the end. Grit your teeth and get on with it;-)

I had two sweeps at the end of my pregnancy with DS and the second one worked. The first was by a consultant, quite gentle and didn't feel that intrusive.

The second one was done by a no-nonsense midwife who shoved her hand inside me and rummaged around like she was pumping a bicycle tyre. It didn't hurt exactly but it was uncomfortable. Not as uncomfortable as late pregnancy though. If I needed one again I'd ask for her..

I had a sweep with DD2 (DD1 was Caesarian). It had no effect at all, and I ended up being induced.

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 02/08/2012 08:45

Oh, and it was quite uncomfortable, but not really painful. Would consider it again.

terilou87 · 02/08/2012 08:46

i had one with my first and it did nothing at all, i was really nervous, no need really it was a little uncomfortable but no big deal really, a few of my friends have had them and they worked.
