Ketones

I have been suffering with hyperemesis since the very beginning of my pregnancy, which has just started to ease off for the last couple of weeks. I am now 21 weeks and when I went for my last midwife appointment, they found that I had +3 ketones in my urine. I wasn't sure why because I hadn't been sick for a few days, but she said I could have been dehydrated. Since then, I have bought the ketostix and been testing every now and then. I have rarely had a negative result and have had between a trace and +3 every time. The last few days have been consistently +2 or +3.

I haven't been sick for at least two weeks and I'm eating and drinking more or less normally. Does anyone know if there's any other reason that I may have ketones now? Could it be a urine infection or something? Should I see a doctor or is there no point?

Thank you

Hi I had this and it turned out my body simply needed longer to balance out everything chemicals/minerals and so forth after my sickness faded. But I also had a friend whose turned out to be a kidney infection so tbh i would go back to the dr and get it checked out and ask their advice. Hth at all.

I had ketones in my urine a couple of weeks ago. Midwife said it was because I wasn't eating enough (due to heartburn) so body breaking down my own fat to release energy and also ketones. Got a telling off Wink a prescription for rannitadine and now all fine. Would guess hyperemesis would reduce food intake so maybe the same for you?
Apparently similar thing happens to some people on Atkins diet who use fat ad protein as main source of calorie intake.

I would say if it is occurring regularly then I would get checked out
HTH

Thanks for your replies - I spoke to a midwife on the phone today and she said to make an appointment for next week. I've had some pains low down which I put down to stretching, but now a kidney infection has been mentioned, I'm slightly worried. I've also needed the loo loads, but just put that down to normal pregnancy tribulations!

Second what bailey said (for me anyway). I went to an appt straight after lunch and did a sample when I arrived. I had ketones and MW said the same about burning fat reserves as my lunch hadn't digested.

When I got home and told DP what MW had said about eating, he couldn't believe it (I eat a lot!).

You do have to snack regularly :)
