Right, I'm off to IKEA. What should I buy? (baby stuff)

It's DC1 so I have no baby kit at all. We are off to Croydon this weekend (assuming scan tomorrow goes well) to start making a few purchases. So far on my Ikea list I have:

  • Gulliver or Sundvik cot
  • Antilop high chair (not needed till older, I know, but I want to avoid multiple trips to ikea if poss!)
  • possibly some of their textiles eg flannels and baby sleeping bags, if nice
  • storage boxes for toys etc

What else is worth looking at? What have you got from IKEA that you would recommend? Any items I should avoid?

thank you!

those are exactly the boxes I had in mind Robot (I am a sucker for bright colours)

The hemnes chests look good but not cheap (given we already have a dresser) but I guess will be needed anyway as DD gets older...

Bibs with arms and plastic play aprons are on the list (or are they the same thing?)

will have to stop myself going mad in the toy dept!

might sign off now as I'm worried I'm tempting fate for the scan tomorrow daft superstition

Went to Ikea today... so had a good nose about the baby stuff.

Definitely get some of the normal baby bibs - they're much bigger than ones you get in Mothercare or similar, so catch more vom spills

RobotHamster · 31/07/2012 20:18

Good luck for the scan tomorrow too x :)

AmandinePoulain · 31/07/2012 20:31

We've got hemnes drawers - they are a really good size - plenty of room for clothes, linen and whatever else you want to chuck in! We went for the standard ones though, not the smaller one with the changing table. We also bought a white children's wardrobe (I can't remember the name of it) and got hemnes knobs from the kitchen section to put on it so it'd match.

GnocchiNineDoors · 31/07/2012 20:37

Don't know if you are still online, or will check back before you go tomorrow, but we have these in the lounge with DDs little toys in (7mo) and they are ideal. She can sit and pick stuff out, or roll around with the toys or indeed the little baskets, and they are just really handy.

MJP1 · 31/07/2012 20:38

OOhh looking at this post makes things so much easier, I have been stressing about where to get stuff thats funky, safe useful and recommended. Thank you x
Although I hate the place we will be taking a trip to Ikea in the near future.

newtonupontheheath · 31/07/2012 20:48

Oh we've got the big chest of hemnes drawers (the tall ones that have two small drawers at the top) they are fab and you can keep stuff out of toddlers reach right on the top of it/in high up drawers

We bought the kids wardrobe though, as blew out budget on the nice drawers. Can't remember the name, but it's also white with a curved bit on the top. Had awful tacky white knobs but we bought hemnes-style knobs from the kitchen section and now it mostly matches.

Bowls, cups and plates about £1 for 6 are good too. We have these also...

God... I've just looked around my living room and, aside from a couple of cushions ALL the furniture is from Ikea..

Whoops.

TheSurgeonsMate · 31/07/2012 21:01

WHAAAAAT! I need at least two inflatable inserts! What were they thinking? Don't they read mumsnet? We are Antilops biggest fan, and we ALWAYS mention the inflatable insert.

AmandinePoulain · 31/07/2012 21:04

Snap newton! Grin

marriednotdead · 31/07/2012 21:18

Grandparent can't believe I'm typing that who has an Antilop highchair for the visiting Weetabix monster. It dismantles in seconds and fits in a large bag for life in the cupboard under the stairs Smile

marriednotdead · 31/07/2012 21:19

The highchair, not the monster in case it's not clear Grin

I think there are cross purposes about the baby gym - there used to be a lovely wooden one with red wooden base legs, this is the one I was saying can later be pushed across a carpeted floor by a cruiser / learning-to-walker. But it's not on the site now. There is also a fabric baby gym which I thought looked a bit collapsey and rubbish.

Anyone want to buy my now apparently limited edition wooden baby gym, with three lovely dangling wooden toys? You can take the toys off very easily and give them to the baby to play with once they can hold things, or dangle them above the baby next to you on the sofa so you can have a glass of wine after dinner before bathtime

PeazlyPops · 31/07/2012 22:14

Re the baby bath, I bought one from ikea for DS. He hated it! He would always cry at bath time. I recently bought a bath support from John Lewis & he loves bath time in our big bath!

GnocchiNineDoors · 31/07/2012 22:18

I use a bath support too, and DD loves bathtime.

StateofConfusion · 31/07/2012 22:25

Baby baths are good for houses with cold bathrooms, or older dc as I always seem to bath the babies when elder ones are in bed. And every house I've lived in has a freezing bathroom!

FriskyBivalves · 31/07/2012 22:30

Oh well I'm in France so maybe they have just run out of inflatable Antilop inserts across the Channel. Will check in the wembley branch when back this weekend. Need two more antilops for the GPs dontcha know. DS has one of those cushioned smart throne ones that a friend kindly gave us but he just slumps to the side in it looking mournful. Only 9months and he lurves his hard plasticky Ikea perch.

MummyPigsFatTummy · 31/07/2012 23:22

I disagree about a rail - there will be dresses in your future and a rail is handy for hanging them from. That said, until you are ready to get a wardrobe for your DD, you could always just hang them in your own.

On the other hand, I bought a changing table and whilst it has been great for a while, I definitely wish I had just got a decent chest of drawers and put a change mat on the top. Sounds like your dresser will work though.

Sorry, missed the post where the op said :)

If you are getting rugs for the floor, remember to get the non-slip matting that goes underneath them. Comes in a roll for a few pounds if I remember correctly and you cut it to size (doesn't need to be perfect, as long as it's smaller than rug it will do) and put it between the rug and floor. It stops the rug sliding on hard floors - was brilliant on our laminate. One roll will do more than one rug unless your rugs are massive :)

Can't recommend anything else as twins haven't arrived yet but do need to get organised ASAP so taking notes for a trip to Ikea soon :)

minipie · 01/08/2012 11:27

Thanks all! Scan was all fine so off to Ikea we go, armed with a very lengthy list Smile

Think I will stick to bath support not baby bath as our bathroom is pretty warm and there isn't really much space for a baby bath on the floor anyway.

Won't get the soft baby gym

Will see if I can justify the hemnes chest!

Thanks for your help everyone!
