Right, I'm off to IKEA. What should I buy? (baby stuff)

It's DC1 so I have no baby kit at all. We are off to Croydon this weekend (assuming scan tomorrow goes well) to start making a few purchases. So far on my Ikea list I have:

  • Gulliver or Sundvik cot
  • Antilop high chair (not needed till older, I know, but I want to avoid multiple trips to ikea if poss!)
  • possibly some of their textiles eg flannels and baby sleeping bags, if nice
  • storage boxes for toys etc

What else is worth looking at? What have you got from IKEA that you would recommend? Any items I should avoid?

thank you!

Muslins are thinner and smaller, they are great for wiping up dribble.

If your monitor has a night light you may not need another one but dd still wants a nightlight and she's passed needing a monitor.

I disagree on the sleeping bags: shoulder poppers are an essential feature to get a sleepy baby in without waking. Get to TKMaxx for some of those.

minipie · 31/07/2012 16:51

Oh i do like the IKEA toys.

I am particularly tickled by this squeaky carrot.

Only at IKEA...

Oh right, hadn't seen the sleeping bags don't have shoulder poppers.

Shame as I really like some of them...

Anything else where the IKEA option isn't so good?

Wish we had the inflatable insert for the antilop highchair - DS isn't very good at sitting up yet so can be a bit slumped in it, which is a bit scary from a choking perspective.

Has anyone mentioned tealights yet? Wink

TheSurgeonsMate · 31/07/2012 17:14

Ha Ha to squeaky carrot, we are reading "Peppa's First Sleepover" at the moment. All the tiny guests have brought a soft toy. There's a bear, a monkey, a frog, and one of them has her cuddly carrot!

ValiumQueen · 31/07/2012 17:15

Rebecca rabbit?

ValiumQueen · 31/07/2012 17:16

At the sleep-over, not ikea

Don't buy the baby gym, it doesn't stay up!!

But do get the playmat, the best 30 euros I've ever spent, my twins spend hours on it!!

minipie · 31/07/2012 18:23

beginners I still have a massive pack of Ikea tealights I bought a couple of years ago! have still only part used it.

Inflatable insert for antilop noted!

Can't see a blue playmat, only a grey Circus one which doesn't seem to have mirrors etc. will look around when there.

thanks again!

Baby gym stays up fine until DD tried to climb it did you attach the red base?

They have some cool stuff for older kids - you'll be back in ikea, trust me!

StateofConfusion · 31/07/2012 18:37

Just marking my place for later as I need to go ikea.

GnocchiNineDoors · 31/07/2012 18:43

I know it wont be in use for a year but everyone I know who has the red egg chair just loves it. Am hoping they still sell it.

ClaireMarathonFeeder · 31/07/2012 19:02

It's attached with velcro. Oh well for me it has been a waste of money. I wouldnt buy it again

Wildwaterfalls · 31/07/2012 19:25

Just got their baby bath for £5.50. Not sure if we will use it (sink or normal bath might also work) but could be handy and a good price!

forevergreek · 31/07/2012 19:31

The plastic bowls/ plates in packs of three are great as little ones can shovel food around plate without falling off and they are microwaveable so great when you make dinner whilst they nap and want to repeat later

RobotHamster · 31/07/2012 19:37

Expedit is great for toys and all baby gubbins. MUCH better than trofast which is ugly and takes up loads of room

If you're buying flannels buy them from the main marketplace near the towels, not the kids area (the kids ones have little coloured tags on them and are very rough)

FriskyBivalves · 31/07/2012 19:47

Inflatable insert update: I went last week and it appears to have been replaced by a shaped stripy fleecy insert. I bought one and it props DS up but obviously is not so easy to wipe off afterwards.

minipie · 31/07/2012 19:49

Wow, they have different sorts of flannels?

One more question: do I need a rail to hang baby clothes on or will stacking them on shelves be ok? I am not precious about creases I don't iron. OTOH I am having a girl so more likely to have a few dresses etc.

If I need a rail, I will look for one I can attach to the bottom shelf of our dresser (and some hangers). (the rail might be a B&Q job rather than IKEA). But that will take up useful baby changing space, so won't bother if folded piles of clothes are ok.

Can't decide about baby bath versus seat for in the bath (from john lewis).

I know I'll have to go back eventually Grin but given the painfulness I hope to get as much as possible this time round...

The Antilop inflatable thing is still on the website and it says the Croydon store still has it in stock...

OP posts:
RobotHamster · 31/07/2012 19:51

Don't bother with a hanger - drawers are easier really.

minipie · 31/07/2012 19:54

Good that's what I wanted to hear Robot! Only thing is I don't have drawers either... just a dresser with (deep) cupboards below and shelves above and a big deep flat surface in between which I will use as change area.

Do I need drawers? if so will have to look at the Ikea chests of drawers...

The bibs with arms are brilliant when weaning. Also highly recommend the house shape sorter, the stacking cups, the fabric storage boxes are great for nappies etc too.

RobotHamster · 31/07/2012 20:02

Malm or Hemnes chest of drawers, with a chang mat on top - just put all the nappies/wipes etc in the top drawer and everything is to hand (there's a specific one here which might be better, but I like hte normal drawers).

RobotHamster · 31/07/2012 20:08

www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/50215772/These kind of boxes are good for nappies etc.
