Is it true you can't have hot baths when pregnant?

I've read you can't have hot baths while pregnant. Is this true, is it just at certain stages of pregnancy, and how hot is hot? I love my baths!

I love my baths too, and I also like them scalding. I'd heard that over-hot baths weren't recommended in pregnancy, so I asked my midwife when I was pregnant. She said that generally it's not advised because of the possible (although not proven) effects that the hot water could have on the blood flow through the placenta, and the fact that you could overheat the baby. It's also possible that if the water is too hot it could make you feel faint or pass out as it can lower your blood pressure very quickly.

You can still have a bath, just be careful not to make it over-hot - it would only be really scalding hot baths that would be a problem.

I modified hot to cool for DS1, hot to warm for DS2 and, erm, not at all for DD... :o

I think it's to do with raising your core temperature too much too.

I was told that a too-hot-for-you bath would feel, you know, too hot. So as long as you weren't pushing it and trying to get it as hot as you could stand (or hotter), you'd be fine.

Apparently young babies, including those not yet born, cannot regulate their temperature. So, if you have a hot bath and it is too hot for you, you sweat. A baby cannot do that and therefore a too hot bath could be dangerous for it.

Im terrible for baths - dont like them over hot very often, but any bath when i was pg made me feel really faint.

Ended up living in the shower through both pgs!

This was my guilty secret during pregnancy - I gave up everything else I possibly could but could not bear to give up very very hot baths Blush

Kelly1978 · 07/03/2006 17:32

I couldn't give up hot baths neither. Did anyone else notice how the bump goes all funny in the bath too, all pointy, as if baby wants to jump out?!

Well I had jacuzzis all through pregnancy! Oops!
My DD loves really hot baths too so maybe thats what got her going!
