Hi, went to the midwife a week ago and was told my baby might have stoped growing, i am 32 weeks pregnant! If baby has not grown by friday i have to go for a scan. Was told this might be due to a bleed i had two weeks ago! Can anybody put my mind at ease as i am woried i'm going to have a small baby?

same here, hope it's all ok and the baby has grown xxx

My sister had a very small baby - about four pounds - a couple of months ago - and he is fine: didn't go to special care or anything. I really hope your baby has grown, but I just wanted to reassure you as far as I can.

Good luck Marne!

My friend had her baby at 34 wks due to pre-ecclampsia. She had an emergency C section after being given steriod injections only about 12 hours before that to try to strengthen the babies lungs. He was born weighing 4lb 12oz.... no special care required.... home after a week!

Fingerscrossed that your baby is growing again nicely, but if not.... there is still a good chance the baby won't need too much special care.

Let us all know how it goes on Friday.

Did the midwife say that exactly?? I was referred for a scan because I was a few cm short on the tape measure (measuring to top of womb or something). The first scan was quite worrying and they said baby might be smaller than 6lbs and this was all worrying for a while. In the end DS was born 3 days after due date and was 7lbs 4oz which was big enough for me. At least if you get to go for the scan then you can see your baby again which is nice. I am sure everything will be fine - i had a friend who had emergency c-section at 32 weeks (for serious complications) and her baby was in spec care for a bit but is absolutely fine - i'm sure this wont happen to you though!

Ultrasound after about 28 weeks is notoriously bad at measuring true sizes of babies. Basically, they can measure up to 1.5 weeks out of the average size for age at 20 weeks, and more like 3-4 weeks out by 30 weeks... well, you can guess how bad it gets by 34 or more weeks! I was told my son was 2.8 kg at 34 weeks, and he was born 2.9 kg 5 weeks later... I'm sure the 34 week scan was terribly wrong! Whatever size they tell you the baby is at the scan, ask them how sure they are of it. They honestly won't be able to tell you, but they should use at least 4 measurements (femur, belly, crown and something else) in trying to guess. External palpitation is often more accurate. Sorry if that doesn't help much, but what I'm saying is that you might want to research the issue before you believe any ultrasound estimates. Good luck.

Best of luck for Friday. If it's any help I was told earlier this year when I was 31 weeks that my baby wasn't growing and I was referred for a specialist scan at UCH. Had to be monitored all the time and I was told to be prepared for a C section. UCH decided it was just a small baby but still had to have two scans a week for the rest of the preganancy and what seemed like constant monitoring. It was incredibly exhausting and stressful as I also have an older child.

I made it to the end though although they were going to induce on the day he was born (with no induction) as they decided he'd stopped growing. He turned out to be 6lb 15 oz and was very long and thin but totally healthly. In fact the scan on the day before the birth showed him to be much smaller than he was.

I spoke to one of the trainee doctors at the hospital and he said that they are always incredibly cautious with pregancies as they could be sued if they miss something.

marne, I had similar with dd1, had a scan at about 34 weeks, which showed v small baby and poor blood flow in the placenta. She was born by C-section at 38.5 weeks, 4lb 5oz. Had to have lots of monitoring up to then, counting dd's movements etc, and it was a worrying time. After 10 days in special care (she had jaundice and was fed by naso-gastric tube), she has never looked back and is now at age 4 about average weight and height. Best of luck for Friday and hopefully the scan won't show any problems - and try not to worry too much easier said than done, but I don't think it helps.

My midwife nearly gave me a heart attack saying the baby wasnt growing and if something showed up on the can I would have to be induced and the baby nearly fell out with the stress.....all was fine, shedd had the tape measure in the wrong position and I had a healthy late baby 9 weeks later.
