Seeing midwife next week and I will be 39+4. Last pregnancy I went 2 weeks late. I can't this time, I just can't!!

Can I ask for a sweep when I see her next week or is it something they will only do after 40 weeks? Never had one before so not sure on what they are and aren't allowed to do!

Can't hurt to ask. I mean your full term and it's not like it's gonna force something to happen if it's not meant too! :) a sweep can only be performed if the cervix is favourable which usually means things are slowly starting to happen anyway :) good luck :)

I'm seeing the midwife on Wed at 39+6 and am interested to hear the experiences of others. I'm really struggling with SPD so will go for one if she offers. My midwife is only there on Wednesdays so if I don't get one this week I'd have to wait another full week or do they send you to the hospital in between? Good look xbox

Oops, good luck! Baby is now dissolving my brain cells as well as my pelvis!

You can ask but a lot of MW's will only do them at 40 weeks. I asked my MW at 38 weeks and she refused. I saw my Consultant at 38+6 due to low platelets and she saw how much pain I was in due to SPD and offered me a sweep. Oh how I loved her! Grin DD arrived about 9 hours later. Good luck!

I asked with DD2 (dd1 arrived on due date) at 39 weeks and they said not until I was 40+1. Had sweep then and DD2 arrived 40+2!

Thank you ladies, I will ask. And if not I will cry and then if all else fails I will chain myself to the surgery doors! Hopefully something might happen before then, fingers crossed!

Good luck to you too whiteangel.

If your midwife doesn't give u a sweep can u go to hospital and ask for one? Also im 40+3 so if a sweep didn't work what would b nxt plan? As my midwife is a. Hard to get hold of and b. Can usually only book me in weekly so I'd have to wait another week!

Hi. I feel your pain as I went ten days overdue with both previous pregnancies. However I just turned down an examination/sweep today-38+6. TBH I have always found them uncomfortable, for up to 48 hours after, and they have never started anything off!
They have said to come in on my due date next week and they will examine/sweep then. But not sure if I will even bother then. The baby is not engaged yet which means I am not too uncomfortable. I'm happy to wait it out this time.
As far as I know, you have to be "favourable" for a sweep-they can't just do it. Your cervix needs to be open a bit, if it isn't they can't do anything.
I know what it is like to be desperate for baby to be out, but try to relax. It won't be long now.

Sorry, meant to say, the reason they are letting me have sweeps "early" is because I have big babies...but this seems to be a tiddler....measured 8 lbs 9oz today.

At your 40 week appointment they should book you for induction. Then if you have baby before no worries, if not you ring up for your induction.

Sweeps can only be done if you have already started to get ready, cervix is starting to dilate and soften.
