I have a sweep tomorrow and it's at my GP surgery. This is my third DD but I've never had a sweep before ? I'm going on my own as DH will b at work ? Worried I will get to the car and my waters will go or something hideous ? Do I need to take anything ?

Hi,
I don't think a sweep will make your waters go per se, but then my waters don't go until baby's head is crowning! (pg with 4th dc)

I had a sweep last time, and I was already contracting a bit. It just got things going iyswim. Contractions got stronger and closer and dd was born 5 hours later!

I would wear a pad, cos you may bleed a little bit. And be prepared to have to call dh pronto if things get going!

Good luck! :)

I had two sweeps with DS. I had a little bleeding after the fist one, which is normal. Second time I went into labour a few hours later. With dd I had exactly the same. No waters went with DS until well into labour and same with dd.

Hi there, I had a sweep with my DD. Got things going a treat for me. Had at in the afternoon on my due day, then started having 'period pains' at 6am the next morning - these turned out to be contractions, and by 1.14am that night, I'd given birth.

I second taking pads - I bled a little afterwards, but my waters didn't break till I was in the throws of DD's head crowning. I think you should be OK to drive home after the sweep, though you may feel a little sorry for yourself (ie similar feelings to very mild period pain sensations - this is totally normal following a sweep). I remember my friend coming over and I spent the evening stuffing pizza down me and having a bit of a giggle so it can't have been that bad! My advice would be to drive home and see if you can get some help with any childcare needed, so you can have a bit of a break when you get home.

Hope the sweep has the desired effect! Good luck Smile

Ok great thanks ladies : D problem I have if I'm the only one in my useless lovely close family that bothered to learn to drive and run a car! So I am also the family fetch and carry! DP says he will try and b home in time Mayb he could wait in reception for me. She sed she would probably offer me a sweep so o think at 40+ 3 that's pretty likely isn't it?

I would think at that stage it's up to you! I went in for a routine midwife appointment on 40+1, and I'd already been having mild contractions for a bit so when she offered me the sweep, I jumped at the chance.

As knickyknocks says, you may feel a little crampy afterwards, but unless you're already in the early stages of labour, I wouldn't have thought it'll get things moving that quickly. Do you have a long drive home?

LCarbury · 30/07/2012 17:09

Yes, when I was already in labour with DD. With DS, I had one or two sweeps (can't remember) in week 40, I think that was worth trying even though I didn't go into labour until week 41, it was not that bad and I thought probably better than an induction.

Reckon you'll be ok with a 15 minute drive.

Hopefully a sweep will get things moving for you. (but not too quickly!!)

Good luck! :)

CountryKitty · 30/07/2012 17:59

Waters broke a few hours after both sweeps and I had DD1 & DD2 the following day. Tomorrow could be it!! Goodluck!
